1980 - 1983:  Navy ROTC Scholarship at the Pennsylvania State University.
  • Training assignment aboard USS King (DDG-41).  Deployed to Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea in 1981.
  • Training assignment aboard USS Farragut (DDG-37), USS Sunfish (SSN-649), Naval Air Station Jacksonville, and Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek in 1982.
  • Completed Basic Naval Parachutist Course, Naval Air Technical Training Center Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1983.
  • Training assignment aboard USS Coral Sea (CV-43).  Deployed to Mediterranean Sea and Central America in 1983.
  • 1984:  Commissioned Ensign USN on 7 January. 

    1984:  Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island. 

    • Completed Surface Warfare Officer Basic Course.
    • Completed DD-963 Main Propulsion Assistant Course.
    1984 - 1986:  USS Briscoe (DD-977), Norfolk, Virginia. 
    • Assigned as Auxiliary Engineering Officer, A Division, and general quarters repair party officer.
    • Completed Repair Party Leader course at Naval Damage Control Training Center, Philadelphia in 1985.
    • Commissioned Lieutenant Junior Grade USN on 7 January 1986.
    • Assigned as First Lieutenant, Deck Division, and general quarters conning officer.
    • Deployed six months with Standing Naval Forces Atlantic (NATO) in 1986.
    1986 - 1987:  Naval Ocean Processing Facility, Dam Neck, Virginia. 
    • Completed Operations Watch Officer Course at Fleet ASW Training Center Atlantic, Norfolk in 1986.
    • Completed Ocean Systems Operational Procedures Training - Officer at Readiness Training Facility Dam Neck in 1986.
    1987:  Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island. 
    • Completed Communications Officer Ashore Course.
    1987 - 1989:  Naval Facility Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada. 
    • Assigned as Communications Officer and Communications Material Security Custodian.
    • Assigned as Operations Watch Officer.
    • Qualified as Ocean Systems Operator Level I - Operations Watch Officer in 1988.
    1989:  Honorably discharged on 1 March.
