Stream Strategies & Tactics:  Have a Plan
When starting each fishing trip, you should have a plan that is flexible. These tips are meant to stimulate your thought process so you can minimize your trial and error time on the stream.

Use your powers of observation:
  • Take water temperature
  • Check for insects’ activity
  • Look for birds over the water
  • Look for rising fish
  • Analyze current in feeding lanes
Move slowly and watch:
  • Go upstream for dry, downstream for wet fly fishing
  • Do not stay in just one spot; look for new lies where trout might feed
  • Watch how close you get to the stream; sun position, water depth, and clarity dictate how close you can get to the fish
  • Change your height, crouch, or crawl if needed
If there is a hatch:
  • Try to match the size, shape, color and movement of dominant insects
When no hatch is occurring:
  • Fish nymphs or wet flies
  • Start on bottom with proven patterns
  • Try attractor dry flies
Experiment:
  • When things are not working, try something different
  • Try something that worked before
