KINES 004

Introduction:  The purpose of this course is to help students develop the skills, tactics and procedures needed for successful fly tying and casting for trout. Instruction will include basic fly tying, fly casting, aquatic ecology, fly fishing tactics and angling ethics as it relates to trout fishing. Students will participate in fly tying, casting, lectures, and presentations, plus field trips to local streams during the class. Welcome to the enjoyable world of fly fishing!!!

The following is a brief outline of fly fishing topics in the general order of when they will be taught.

This is a basic outline of the acivities that can be exected over the course of the semester. A specific timeline of activities can be found by clicking the link for your specific semesters class.

Summer - First 6 Weeks

  113 Rec  3 Hrs Introduction, class history; Lifecycle of the Mayfly video; fly fishing opportunities; tools; Muskrat wet fly demo; students tie fly, Clinch knot
  113 Rec  3 Hrs Materials, threads, hooks, sizing; review & continue muskrat wet fly, soft hackle wet fly; importance of size, shape, color; Surgeons knot
  113 Rec  3 Hrs Trout stream ecology, hydrology; needs of a trout; foods, nymphs (mayfly, caddis, crustacean); emergence chart for Central PA; insect cycles, tie wet flies, add wings; Anatomy of a Trout Stream video
  113 Rec  3 Hrs Introduce wet fly fishing tactics, opportunities, tying tips; review all proportions, practice tying; discuss rods, reels, lines; Blood knot
  113 Rec  3 Hrs Intro dry fly hackle, discuss dry fly tactics; tie dry flies; finish equipment, casting demo; move to gym area for basic casting.
 
  113 Rec  3 Hrs Revue where we are, practice tying; leader presentation, tie leaders, Nail knot. Casting lessons, roll casting; tie flies for field trips.

  113 Rec  3 Hrs Meet at IM Bldg Lot, carpool to spring creek. Tactics demo, line control; observation, reading the water, edges, practical application of tactics and flies.

Debrief field trip, what worked and why. Miscellaneous, catch up, review, practice tying for next field trip.

  113 Rec  3 Hrs Meet At Fisherman’s Paradise Observation skills/ interpret what the stream is giving us and practice skills you have developed. More will be learned on 2nd trip due to earlier  experience (learning curve).

The class will make one field trip as a unit. Each student is also required to go on at least one of the other field trips. On the field trips you may fish if you have a valid Pennsylvania fishing license and trout stamp; otherwise you observe, absorb, and learn.  Additional field trips will be available as time permits.
