Essential Equipment for Fly Fishing
Waders or hip boots – with felt soles, if possible.
Hat – baseball or brimmed types.
Polarized sunglasses – prescription or flip-up.
Vest with ample packets.  Include the following:

  1.  Assortment of flies
  2.  Leaders and tippets – 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x
  3.  Split shot – B/BB
  4.  Needle nose pliers to pinch down barbs
  5.  Snips
  6.  Fly floatant
  7.  Stream thermometer
  8.  Insect repellent
  9.  Landing net
10.  Optional camera for those catch and release photos

Since the vest is designed to be worn while you fish, try to organize it while you have it on you.  This should speed up the process of becoming familiar with each pocket’s contents.
Rod – start with an 8 or 8˝ foot, 5 or 6 weight rod.
Reel and line should balance rod (Suggestion: start with double-tapered floating line).
