Introduction: This is a special edition of our popular Fly Fishing course that targets undergraduate students who are willing to try a new activity. The course is designed to introduce you into the natural world surrounding the PSU Campus; a setting that while new and beautiful can also be intimidating to many students. Our surrounding area is blessed with some great outdoor opportunities, and of particular interest to our class are the premier trout fishing streams. Penn State is known throughout the world as Fly Fishing U because of its angling course offerings. It is the hope of the faculty and friends of the program that you will use this class to develop this lifetime skill and an appreciation of the outdoors that you can carry with you anywhere your career takes you after your time at PSU!

Who: Open to any PSU Student but focus is on Students new to the sport.

What: Intro To the particulars of Fly Fishing for trout, 1 1/2 credits to Satisfy your GDR activity credits
- Reverse registration Kines 004
- Grading based on class log and a short reflection paper on the course.

When: Three evening classes 7:00-9:00PM Tuesdays, March 29, April 5h, 12th . . Field trip is scheduled Sunday afternoon April 17th.

Where: Classes will be held in Room 113 Recreation Hall, behind west bleachers. The field trip site will be selected depending on weather and stream conditions.

Format: Initial classes will prep students on the skills and knowledge needed to get started in the FF activity. Students will be matched up with an experienced student mentor who will help shorten the learning curve and enhance the quality of the students’ experience. The field trip will be led by the instructors. This will give the students the opportunity to try their new skills on one of the world class streams in the Penn State area. Additional field trips will be available as requested.
Class Log Students are required to keep a class log of each class session.
Reflections Paper Write about experiences throughout the course.
Fly Tying Tie an asortment of flies for field trip.
Casting Skills Basic fly casting skills to catch fish.
Knots Learning practical knots for fly fishing

Meeting 1 Tuesday 7:00p - 9:00p Intro FF at PSU and what we hope to accomplish with class.

Grading class log and short reflection paper on the course

What makes Fly Fishing different/Intro Rods /Reel/Lines

Skills: Casting, Knot, Improved Clinch knot

Tie: Mentor demos tying flies for the field trip, Muskrat Nymph

Meeting 2 Tuesday 7:00p - 9:00p

Needs of the trout and Anatomy of stream

Skills: Casting in Main Gym

Knot: Surgeons knot

Tie: Woolly buggers, egg patterns

Meeting 3 Tuesday 7:00p - 9:00p

Proper gear, clothing boots, fly box, leaders, vest or pouch

Skills: Cast in gym tie leader on

Knot: Perfection loop

Tie: San Juan worm, Green weenie
Mentors favorite fly

Meeting 4 Sunday 2:00p - Dark Site to be determined by weather and water conditions. Evening meal provided
Meeting 5 By Appt. Hand in Reflection Papers and Class Logs
