- Live Bird Market Closures

Live Bird Market Closure in Northeast Markets

Which Markets are Affected?

New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut; 122 Live bird markets in all.

Why are they closing the markets?

The markets are being closed in an effort to control low-path avian influenza in the marketplace

When does this all take place??

The bird markets will be closing April 8th and remain closed till April 10th.

What will happen during this time?

All birds at market will be removed, and the premises, coops and other equipment will be cleaned and disinfected.  All then will be allowed to sit idle till the clearance to reopen by the state veterinary services is given.  Planned opening would not take place until after 12:01am on 4/11/2002, and only after being approved to do so by the state in which the market is located.

What does this mean to the Producers of Poultry?

There will be a lull in your market activities for three days.  Plan this time to disinfect your poultry handling equipment as well.

What does this mean to the Consumers who purchase live poultry?

This will mean that live birds will not be available for 3 days.  This is being done to help protect our food supply and the industry that produces it.  We hope you will understand the need for this delay.
