- CIA World Factbook - Every year the CIA releases demographic and geographic information by country to the Public Domain. Includes maps, health data, brief sumamry of political system, miltary information and economic information. Sorted by country and geographic region.
- Flags of the World - one of my all-time favorites ever. Not only are the flag histories incredibly detailed (think provinces of France), but they can be downloaded for educational use as long as the artist and copyright are cited.

- Webcam Search - Includes images from around the globe
- Pick a Trail - Practical hiking maps and tips covering the world. Includes photos, wildlife and toxic plant caveats, currency and hotel information and more. Also some great regional maps
- Degree Confluence Project - Penn State project in which photos are taken of every grid pointo f the longitude latitude system. You can see references for all countries. Also includes some discussion of sperical geometry.
- The World's Water - From the Pacific Institute. Includes datasets and a chronology of conflicts over fresh water supplies.
- European Forests and Protected Areas - Maps highlighting foressted regions in Europe. See also a comparison with the United States.

Aspects of daily life we take for granted have very interesting histories and variations
- Kinhip and Social Organization - Online tutorial about basics of kinship organization.
- International Museum of the Horse - As someone noted, the horse has been used for thousands of years, is still in use in many parts of the world, and will probably continue after other forms of transportation become obsolete
- E-Lopers Comparative Weddings - A couple who travelled and remarried in several alternate ceremonies. Not exactly academic, but it provides an interesting perspective on what it's like to go through a ceremony.
- Digital Librarian Yurts, Tipis and Tents - Many cultures traditionally live in buildings constructed of cloth or leather
- British Library Illuminated Manuscripts of Many Faiths - Illuninated manuscripts from different faiths housed in the British Library. Lots of South Asia (Indi, but also Christianity, Judiasm, Islam.

- The Weather Map in Latin (latin.wunderground.com) - To switch languages, change the "latin" part in the Web address to the target language (e.g. spanish.wunderground.com is the Spanish weather) I think it's a good linguistics exercise
- U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Many Languages
- Numbers in 4500 Languages - This website lists the numbers 1-10 in over 4,500 languages. Organized by language family.
- Why Can't They Just Speak...? - A Unicode test page showing that frustration with foreign languages could be universal.
