Second Life
Uses in higher education
The potential in a persistent, well-managed, virtual world is clearly evident. Specific uses are, I'm finding, not immediately evident to outsiders. No matter how many demos I witness or participate in, I don't believe I'll ever see that "aha!" moment light up someone's face unless they're actually participating. Get involved.
More will follow on this page, including video, demos, a realistic list of positives and negatives. Yes, we have heard of Croquet. It's a still developing open-source architecture like Second Life; and my money is on the open-source solution; who can afford ProtoSphere? In the mean time, media developers, instructional designers, faculty, and students need a place to develop the skills they'll need in a virtual world. Second Life lets them do that while the technical side of Croquet is worked out.
