Garbett, Geoff, and Ian Skelton. The Wreck of the Metta Catharina. Truro, Devonshire: New Pages, The Cottage Pulla Cross, 1987. An account of the discovery and recovery of the wreck of a Danish trader of the Baltic brigantine type, the Frau Metta Catharina of Flensburg, which foundered in a storm off Plymouth Harbour on the 10th December 1786, bound from St. Petersburg to Genoa. She was discovered on 20 October 1973. The most dramatic find was her cargo of reindeer hides tanned as Russia leather in bundles of six. These have been revived and are marketed today. Some copies of the book were supplied with samples of the leather. Many illustrations. Wrapper.

Gauffecourt, Jean Vincent Capronnier de (1692-1766). Traité de la Relieure Des Livres. La Motte: [Gauffecourt], 1763. The earliest French publication devoted to this subject. Related manuscripts are at the Grolier Club and at the Cambridge University Library (ex Felbrigg, ex Munby). An extremely limited private press edition, thought to be 36 or fewer copies. Today three are known: a private collection; Bibliothèque Publique de Dijon; and Bibliothèque Publique et Universitaire de Genève.

The printing press and bindery were founded in 1731 and remained active, and largely unchanged until they were closed in 1899, although after 1775 production slackened. ["This draft list of eighteenth century Oxford bookbinders is circulated for discussion at the Sconul seminar on the history of bookbinding held at the Bodleian (pen-and-ink correction to Taylorian Library, September 1975. I. G. Philip)." Thirty eight pages: introduction, references, and an alphabetical directory of binders, followed by two appendices. This was not published and it was not mentioned in Giles Barber's review of the SCONUL conference in the Times Literary Supplement for 19 Dec 1975. It is an excellent collection of the archival evidence of eighteenth-century Oxford binders, with references to books and literature as well. Not illustrated. Reproduced from typescript.

Sullivan, Sir Edward. The Bookbinders of the Irish House of Parliament 1613-1800. London: Quaritch, 1905. 50 illustrations. Also, a single folio colored plate of the binding for the Journal of the Irish House of Commons voume 34 was issued as a prospectus for Sullivan's proposed book on the Parliamentary bindings. It was given to a few friends, but never issued. See Quaritch catalogue 908/183. The bindings were destroyed in the fire of 1922, and Sullivan's record (phography and rubbings) are all that remain of a magnificent series of some of the finest bindings ever produced.
