Who are the Smeals?

Mary Jean and Frank Smeal graduated in Penn State's class of 1942, with degrees in arts and letters, and economics, respectively. The same year, they married at the State College home of Mary Jean's parents. Her father was a professor and head of Penn State's Department of Botany. The Smeals supported many University projects. The Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal College of Business Administration was named in their honor in 1989 following a $12 million gift. Frank Smeal was a partner of the Goldman Sachs Group of New York City. Mary Jean died in 1998. Frank Smeal died in 2003.
