Understanding Students

I have been observing behavior in my class that sometimes boggles my mind, and in chatting with others, I think I am not alone.... In my quest (and it feels like that) for answers to why students act the way they do today (and I do realize I am starting to sound old - ugh!), I found some useful resources that you might also appreciate.

Student Resistance
Who wants to talk about student resistance?  An interesting article - with data and strategies that address student resistance to active learning strategies - http://www.ntlf.com/html/ti/risks.htm from The National Teaching and Learning Forum. It is enlightening and helpful!

Generation Me
This book by Jean Twenge, a professor at San Diego State University, describes a genreation with the most.... and the most to lose...Visit the author's blog to read an excerpt and join an ongoing discussion which I am finding fascinating. It seems that finally some research data is coming along to shed some light on current student behavior. http://www.generationme.org/

Boomers, Gen-Xers, and Millennials

Boomers, Gen-Xers, and Millennials: Understanding the New Students, by Diane Oblinger of EDUCAUSE  http://www.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/erm0342.pdf offers a look at some new attitudes and aptitudes of the current generation of students.

Today's Students and Social Media - Watch Danah Boyd's presentation from the 2009 TLT Symposium about how students are using social media differently than we do.

As educators, we hope to build up our students, so that when they leave us, they are more informed, more intelligent, and better educated than when they came to us. It is my hope that by getting a better handle on who my students are and how they tick, I can better facilitate the process.
