Running Technology

homerruns.jpg

Yesterday, I ran in the THON 5K and had a blast. For those of you who were not there, it was awesome and a lot of people came out. FTK (For the Kids)! In a recent article from USA Today, technologies that track and provide data on a person's run are discussed. Garmin Forerunner 305, one of these devices, maps a runner's path and records his distance, speed, pace and heart rate. Other devices that use the Global Positioning System are geared at athletes competing in long-distance events, including cyclists, triathletes and hikers. The popularity of these devices has spiked as more people discover the websites where all this information is being uploaded and compared, including SportsTrack, Garmin Ltd.'s MotionBased.com and Nike's Nikeplus.com. These websites provide a community where these athletes can talk about their usually solitary workouts with others. I think that these technologies are pretty cool, but I am not that serious of an athlete to use one of these devices. I just like going out for a run and listening to my mp3 player. However, there is one site that I sometimes use from time to time. It is called mapmyrun.com. Check it out if you ever want to know how far you have run or walked in Homer's case.
