Finding Landsat Data

Refer to the Project 4 JPEG image to answer the following questions.

 

*1.  What is this specific area of State College? Why is it this color?

This is a residential area which is composed of trees, gardens, grass and town houses. This is shown but the broken green.

2.  What time of year was this image taken?  How can you tell?

It was taken either in the spring but more likely in the summer. The map shows greens which shows that there is now snow on the ground and that the grass is gown alive.

*3.  What is this feature?

It is the Penn State golf course

4.  Why is the feature in #3 such a vibrant green?

It is a vibrant green because it is maintained and fertilized grass as the area is a golf course.

Compare and contrast numbers 5 and 6.

*5.  What is this feature?  How can you tell?

It is a plotted out piece of land probably assigned for agriculture, because of the green color the area is used of vegetation of some sort it could also be assigned grazing area for cattle or some other livestock.

*6.  What are these features?  How can you tell?

This area is agriculture or farm land as it is a uniformed piece of land. Because of the pink color it is most likely to be exposed soil which indicates that it will be used for some crop plantation.

*7.  What is this feature?

This feature is merely a cloud in the sky.

*8.  How is this feature related to #7?

This image was taken at an angle and that dark are is the shadow caste by the cloud on to the ground.

*9.  What is this line feature?

The feature is the road, West College Ave

*10.  What is this general area in State College and why is it so dark?

This is an urban area or and area of dense urban structure. This will be the Buildings associated with Penn State University. The color associated with urban area is usually shades of purple and pale blue.

Bonus Question

*11.  What do you think this feature is?

This feature is the lawn area out side the Hub.

Reflect on this assignment.  What did you learn? Are remotely sensed images useful?  How might you use remote sensing in the “real world”?

 

This assignment was useful in the fact that even though you may not identify an image on a remote sensing map but through different colors you can pick out certain features. Even though the image does not give you an accurate depiction of road ways, or rivers, or even contours like a conventional topomap would it does isolate different areas and features distinctly.  

Remote sensing can be used of disaster assessment and even environmental monitoring.

It is a tool to assess town or city growth and different land uses.
