| Labs used in Spring, 2007 |
| Archimedes' Principle |
Verify Archimedes' Principle using 2 objects that sink (in water and glycerol), and one object that floats in water. |
| Waves on a String |
Observe standing waves on a string. Used to make sure everyone from any earlier 2-year background understands the concepts of wavelength, frequency, standing waves, etc. |
| Sound Waves |
From PASCO scientific. Mainly qualitative aspects of sound. |
| The Coefficient of Linear Expansion |
Determine the coefficient of linear expansion for 4 metal rods. |
| Specific Heat of Solids |
Determine the specific heats 4 metal samples, using water, an aluminum calorimeter cup, etc. Note that there have been some changes made that are announced in class, but are not yet in the handout. (To heat the metal samples, we used an aluminum cup immersed in hot water, rather than immersing the metal samples directly in the water.) |
| A Study of Thermodynamic Processes |
Use a pressure sensor and temperature sensor to plot P vs. V in a nearly isothermal case, and P vs. T in an isochoric process. |
