Robert Schrauf is professor and head of the Department of Applied Linguistics at Penn State University.  He completed a doctorate in medical anthropology with a specialization in cognitive anthropology at Case Western Reserve University and postdoctoral training in cognitive psychology at Duke University.  From 2000 to 2004 he was an assistant professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University with an appointment in the Buehler Center on Aging.  He is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and past-president of the Association for Anthropology and Gerontology.

His research in cross-cultural gerontology and health focuses on:

  • language, culture, and cognitive aging

  • applied linguistics and health sciences

  • bilingual autobiographical memory. 

His research has been supported by the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Alzheimer’s Association, and others.  Current projects include research on intra- and intercultural variation in Alzheimer’s disease and aging, and the development of internet-based, video-conferenced educational programs in clinical medical interpreting.
