Under pressure.

It's going on 10pm, and I've just gotten home after an early morning departure, a full day of work, meetings and a great lunch gathering, after work errands, plus trying to create a couple of presentations. Home feels good. And then I realize--I have no blog post for the day. I actually have one for tomorrow, believe it or not. But today? Nope.

Nada.

Nothing. (sigh)

Nuts.
This is why I'm not very successful in doing a post a day challenge. Because sometimes, I can't pull a column out of my... hat. Blogging can be hard work. You need to be funny, or interesting, or at the very least engaged in a point you want to make or a topic you want to explore. Mine is more the social commentary, and I usually have to be able to relate to it.

Of course, there are the days when really great things are happening, and I can't wait to talk about them. For example, the LDSC is really rocking the park this week, and I'm excited about some of the things we are working on, and how they are shaping up. I know that it's only the second time around this summer, but I am very invested in this program. The ability of a community to build and grow an event that feels like a grassroots experience is really an amazing thing in which to participate. Add to that the fact that I am so invested but not an employee of the actual sponsoring group, and you really have to step back and say, wow--how cool is that?

gracie.jpgThere are also the two conference presentations I'm preparing, and trying to make them both interesting and engaging. Not as easy as it sounds. Don't get me wrong; I'm definitely looking forward to going and presenting at the conferences; I just can't seem to get my flow right to craft a compelling, focused narrative. I know it will come, but I just don't think it's going to happen today. Sometimes you just can't force the good stuff to come, and you just have to close up shop and turn your attentions to the quiet things that make up the rest your life. Because it will be in those quiet moments, when the brain isn't trying to overachieve, or juggling all the components of the day, that you feel the pressure start to let up, and ideas begin to flow again. So I think it's time to bow to the force of The Muse and put my laptop away for the night, spend some attention on the affection starved Love Junkie, and release some of the creative pressure I'm feeling.

It's a darn good thing I'm definitely not participating in this one post a day challenge.

If it’s a good idea and it gets you excited, try it, and if it bursts into flames, that’s going to be exciting too. People always ask, ‘What is your greatest failure?’ I always have the same answer—We’re working on it right now, it’s gonna be awesome! —Jim Coudal
