Information is excelling at a great rate around us and sometimes it’s amazing to realize that 100 things happened within a 10-block radius of where you live, work or play.  As thee realizations are made, opportunities are also made. Enter EveryBlock. This site currently only supports some of the major US cities such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. If you happen to have an interest is these cities, EveryBlock acts as an aggregate of all the happening news, graffiti reports, building code violations, lost and found listings, crime reports, business reviews, restaurant inspection reports and so on. What makes this site so interesting is that this could possibly be the first step in the future on influencing how Americans understand and judge their country’s geographic locations.

On the positive side imagine a future where:
Families are researching up to date information on possible areas of where they would like to live and using this information to make these important decisions
A more informed nation as the flow of information is bridged to the masses by making the statistics easily accessible
Newspapers become obsolete as local and international information becomes mapped for consumer convenience (save a couple of trees)
Civilians know not only where it happened, but WHERE it happened, down to the single street block and can observe trends around that specific location

On the negative side imagine a future where:
Demographic information can become manipulated and have the intended effects of influencing people where to shop, eat, or live
The statistics of geographic locations creates a class centric society and shakes up our previous social structures
Businesses become shut down due to falsely laid bad reviews
Where a slip up could occur in the information processing and YOU become an enemy of the state, and no one believes you

Any other opinions of the future of information flow and accessibility?

My name is Rolland Castro and this is my IST 431 blog in which I will discuss multiple facets of how technology and society mingle between each other. I am an IST major going into the Context Option. I enjoy a bunch of activities (If you want the full scoop on my interests Facebook me). I personally feel that technology and society are unified unto a cycle of human progression but I do feel it is rather important to take a step back every now and then see what is happening from an un-socialized point of view.

Technology, in my younger experiences has been one of the most controlling factors in my life. I could remember I used to be very well addicted to technology, especially in terms of entertainment. Now it seems technology has become much more of a chore in the sense that I feel the need to upgrade based on trends and the fact that I enjoy tinkering with the latest releases on stuff whether it be a new version release of software or the latest piece of consumer technology. Because of the chore the practice technology has become, I have found enjoyment in observing technology and society interact. For example, it’s funny to see how an Xbox 360 and a shooting game have drastically affected the culture of my apartment and friends who revolve around roommates who live at our apartment. Over the course of 2 months, terminology, subject matter of conversations and use of free time had changed noticeable due to the effects of my apartment hooked on this single video game. Situations like the example I gave are amazing occurrences to me and make me wonder where else in society (or societies) this could possibly happen and what technologies could perpetrate such changes.

So I hope you enjoyed the sampling of what blogging with me will be like, stay tuned for more posts!
