About

OracleLab.co.uk is the online psychology lab of Rob Burriss (real labs are overrated - you have to hoover them and everything).

I received my PhD in 2007 from the University of Liverpool, where I studied under John Lycett and Tony Little. Right now I'm a research associate in David Puts' lab at Penn State. You can view my CV here.

I'm interested in how people use information from faces to inform their mate-choice and mate-retention behaviours. I try to answer questions like: Can we tell if someone's ovulating just by looking at them? Do opposites really attract? Do we fancy people partly because we know others fancy them? Do chicks dig scars? I've also been known to idly ponder the relative importance of the face and body when it comes to attractiveness. After conducting some laborious analyses I think I've come up with the answer. (Or you might want the real answer.)

I produce the monthly Psychology of Attractiveness Podcast, which is aimed at people who like the Nature podcast but wish it was (a) a bit less 'sciency', (b) presented by a bald man, and (c) recorded in a cupboard under a blanket. I also recently started another podcast, One Minute Ev Psych.

Email me at rob [insert at sign] oraclelab[.]co[.]uk. Unless you're an Internet weirdo, in which case I'd rather you didn't (I scare easily, like a crab). OL bullet

rss chicklet Experiments
Most of my experiments are run over the web, meaning that if it weren't for people like you helping me out I'd probably be living under a bridge eating baked beans from a can. Don't let me end up like that: do one of my experiments!
01. Which face do you prefer?

eyes

This short experiment is for heterosexual persons. You just choose which of two faces you prefer.

02. LGB face preferences

If you're lesbian, gay or bisexual you might like to take part in this study of face preferences. What do you find attractive in a face?
