Penn State Great Valley
_______________________________________________________________
The Design Apprenticeship in
Instructional Systems at Penn State Great Valley is designed to provide
practical experience in some area of instructional design or development in an
educational setting. Based on this goal, the Design Apprenticeship will include
the following:
1. Three (3) credits of INSYS 596 (Design Apprenticeship)
2. At least 160 hours of experience in an instructional setting, working at least 20 hours per week
3. Supervision in the work setting by an experienced instructional professional who will provide a brief, written evaluation of your work at the end of the Design Apprenticeship
4. Production of a weekly, written 1og describing the Design Apprenticeship experience.
The student will also produce a final professional paper based on their Design Apprenticeship experience that will serve as the final Master's paper required for graduation (see examples of previous papers in the GV library). This paper typically includes the following sections (NOTE: at your advisors discretion):
1. Front pages including a title page, faculty signature page, student signature page, and table of contents
2. Chapter One (Introduction) – describe the context or the Design Apprenticeship experience, reasons for the student choosing that particu1ar site, and other relevant details to provide background information
3. Chapter Two (Design Apprenticeship Log) – describe the Design Apprenticeship on a week-by-week basis in terms of specific duties, experiences, requirements, etc.
4. Chapter Three – discuss some aspect of instructional systems directly related to the Design Apprenticeship, written as a “research paper” including cited references, etc.
5. Chapter Four (Reflection) – describe how the student felt about the Design Apprenticeship experience, whether it was a suitable culminating experience for the Instructional Systems Program; whether it would be appropriate for other students, etc.
6. Cited References for the Review of Literature
7. Appendices that are referenced in Chapters 1-4 showing examples of produced materials, such as a school technology plan, staff development needs assessment, a training module for teachers to learn about different aspects of technology, or other evidence of the Design Apprenticeship.
Anyone seeking a Design Apprenticeship to act as their final Master's project should contact a full-time Instructional Systems faculty member for approval of the location and experience before beginning work.
