Formerly a preschool and primary grade teacher, I’ve worked at Penn State since 1990 as a faculty member within the Curriculum and Instruction Department.  Currently, I am a professor of Education and the coordinator of the Reading Specialist certification program and the  integrated undergraduate/graduate program for Special Education/Curriculum and Instruction.  I teach masters level classes within the Reading Specialist program.  Previously, I taught at the University of Minnesota, York University, Purdue University, and the University of Houston.  I’m married to Kathleen Shannon who is an academic advisor in the College of Education.  Our daughter Laura studies genetics in a post-doctoral position at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and our son Tim is a digital game producer at s2 Games in Kalamazoo, MI.  I play in a band called The Beaver with my friends from high school in Fairport, New York.
