How to make a fool of yourself

Step one: Satirize a national tragedy
Step two: Have your outrageous pictures uploaded to Facebook where everyone can see them
Step three: Attempt to justify your humor through poor logic

Try it! Wait, someone already has Read and be more or less disgusted. It's even worse that these are Penn State students, but in such a big school I guess there have to be the occasional idiots.

Relevance?
Facebook usage and security settings. The group had created a photo album showing off their racy costumes, intended to be viewed only be close friends. They set the viewing privileges to reflect this. However, some sort of mixup occurred where the girl allowed the album to be viewed outside of the friend circle and a group was created focusing on the album's content.

Do I really have to point out the moral(s) of this story?

Just manage your profile on the internet wisely.

Shameful picture of one of the perpetrators:

Absolutely disgraceful. In the Collegian today, Jones said he would die before he apologize for his costume selection and dressed up as a VT victim as commentary on the current insensitive trend of Halloween costumes. He has also received death threats. All for the want of a Facebook picture.

You don't do that to a grieving community. I just don't understand. The kid has turned a tragedy into a bigger one. It's bad enough that people are dealing with the loss of their classmates to flawed logic of one individual, but now they are threatening a man with lynching and bulldozing (literally, by bus). For what? Being edgy?

Manage your profile wisely? This whole issue does deal with technology because the photos were on Facebook, but the persons' mistake was not putting the photos on Facebook and mismanaging their profiles. Their mistakes were made (and excuse the language, but this is a univeristy and we do have some sort of free speech) in being completely insensitive asses. Yes, manage your profile well. But do not forget to manage your soul well. Well, in this case, it does not look like the people involved have one to manage.

Just another reason why I dislike Facebook. It's bad enough that they did that, but it's even worse that stuff like that was posted. It kind of reminds me when the one fraternity here posted their video on YouTube where they threw stuff at OSU Fans. I hate to say it, but ANYTHING and EVERYTHING posted to the Internet CAN and WILL be seen by EVERYONE eventually, whether or not there are privacy settings.

Sorry, DJ, I meant that the moral was too obvious to point out- that they were being way too insensitive. The 'manage your profile wisely' is an afterthought. Good point though

Such is the magic of the internet that this kind of assholery can be shared with the world instead of just those in your physical vicinity. Seriously though, putting something you want to keep private on the internet is intensely stupid. [sarcasm]Good thing they were morons and jerks[/sarcasm].

Matt Maisel:

I really cant understand why someone in their right mind would do something like this. Penn State was one of the most active in showing support for VT, too. All it takes it one village idiot to undone a lot.
