Costa Rica

Hi, my name is Steve Norman. I worked as a forestry volunteer in Costa Rica from 1991 until 1993. I worked with a group of farmers in the forest reserve outside of Corcovado National Park which is one of the most significant West Coast lowland rainforest remnants in all of Central America. I awoke early every morning to the cry of howler monkeys (and roosters, of course), not to mention the biting ants that would come out of the cane walls of my house looking for breakfast. In addition to providing farmers with technical support regarding their reforestation projects, I worked hand-in-hand with my community in the construction of a school. I also adopted a pesticide safety program.

My Peace Corps service was the best two years of my life - but certainly not the easiest. The bureaucracy of the program that I was working in almost ruined the progress made during the first year that I was there.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding Peace Corps service.
