DUMAN

Duman is the best rock band in Turkey if you ask me. They play alternative rock, highly affected by the elements of grunge. But they also incorporate traditional Turkish and Oriental melodies in their songs. That’s the reason they are also considered as an “Anatolian rock” band. Duman has three permanent members: Kaan Tangoze is on vocals and guitar (he is the one composing almost each song and writing the lyrics; so he is the brain); Ari Barokas is on back vocals and bass guitar; Batuhan Mutlugil is on back vocals and lead guitar.

Duman means “smoke” in English. But, as specified by the band members, the name, Duman, comes from one of their songs: Halimiz duman, a phrase meaning “our situation is dire”. Thus, Duman means “dreadful” or “dire” as well as “smoke”.

I am definitely a loyal fan of them. My “love affair” with this band started when they were playing at bars in Turkey under the name of Mad Madame in the first half of the 1990s. Back that time, the band was consisting of Tangoze, Barokas and Yakup Trana, and they were covering foreign rock songs, in which the best ones were by Pearl Jam. Since only a few famous musicians -almost none- were caring about giving concerts in Turkey, we were trying to be pleased with what we had instead. But, after all, they were quite successful as a cover band. They were enjoying what they were doing a lot and this was making us enjoy their music. Dreamy nights at Kemanci and Flatline! Then, Tangoze and Trana went to Seattle, I moved to Maryland. So I lost connection with them.

But, one day in 1999, a miracle happened! While I was craving to listen to Turkish music after all these years that I had spent abroad, here they were playing again, but this time, their own music and all in Turkish. Great! The name of the band had changed to Duman; Trana had been replaced by Mutlugil as lead guitarist. But they were still carrying the same spirit in terms of sharing their music.

The name of their first CD was Eski Koprunun Altinda (Under the Old Bridge), which is still my favorite one. Since I have passed through similar experiences as being from the same generation, their songs spoke to me. I could not give up listening to them after that! Three more recordings have been released after the first one: Belki Alisman Lazim (You may need to get used to) in 2002; Konser (Concert) in 2004, involving their live performances; Seni Kendime Sakladim (I saved you for me) in 2005. I have listed them below. Here they are!

The melody of their songs is simple but catchy. The lyrics are deep, daring, and sincere. Many people, especially the ones from my generation or younger, can find themselves easily in them. All these helped them earn great success in Turkey. Many new Turkish rock bands have followed in their footsteps. Their fame is growing like an avalanche. Each time I attend their concerts, I cannot believe how quickly the number of their fans is increasing. We cannot keep the best only for us after all!

They are quite generous in terms of the number of concerts they perform. I was able to catch at least one of their concerts whenever I was visiting Turkey. I should say their live performance is much better than their recordings. They love what they are doing very much. And they pass this energy to the audience. If you attend their concerts, you will not be sorry. They are like religious ceremonies. The band members are the gods and the audiences are the prayers, crying out their words.

I am working like a loyal “agent” to introduce this band to my friends abroad. I would say that I can be considered successful so far; they liked Duman. Since all songs were written in Turkish, they wanted to know what their songs were about. When I searched the web for some information about the band and their songs in English, I could not find much. That’s the reason I decided to devote a part of my web page to them. I hope this page would help you better know Duman.

The pictures on this page are relatively old ones. I did this intentionally. In the pictures, they look exactly the way that I want to remember them.

Thank you very much, Duman, for making life more enjoyable for us!

Here is the list of songs, taking place in their three albums. I translated the ones that I liked the most. I should admit that I am not a professional translator and I have learned my lesson in terms of how hard to translate any lyrics or poem without harming any deep feelings hidden in words, and their harmony. I tried my best, but I want to say sorry before hand, thinking it was not a great success.

Live the Life

You stepped into the world from darkness
Without any thinking, you sold your soul for a lie
You have suffered in each moment of your life

Wake up, my friend, wake up from this sweet dream

Come along, enjoy yourself, believe in me

Don’t be mistaken by the other world

Live the life, don’t afraid

Don’t ask about the other world

Live the life, live the life

Hayatı Yaşa

Bir adım attın karanlıktan dünyaya

Düşünmeden sattın ruhunu bir yalana

Bin çile çektin ömrümün her anında

Uyan dostum uyan şu tatlı rüyadan

Hadi keyfine bak inan bana

Aldanma öbür dünyaya

Hayatı yaşa korkma

Öbür dünyayı sorma

Hayatı yaşa hayati yaşa

Under Bridge*

I have crossed the seas, coming back

You know my worry is you

I have turned from my way, breaking off

You know my worry is you

I have crossed the seas, coming back

I don’t care if you make fun of me

If only I see your face once

I know our ways are separate

Once before I die

If only I grasp your waist

Come along, let’s meet under the old bridge

Let no one see

Let’s walk against the moonlight under the old bridge

Let no one know

Let no one hear

Let no one see

Köprüaltı

Denizler aştım geliyorum

Bilirsin derdim seninle

Yolumdan döndüm kopuyorum

Bilirsin derdim seninle

Denizler aştım geliyorum

Ister eglen benimle

Yüzünü bir görsem yeter

Yolumuz ayrı biliyorum

Ölmeden son bir defa

Belini kavrasam yeter

Hadi bi gel buluşalım eski köprünün altında

Kimseler görmesin

Mehtaba karsı uzanalım eski köprünün altında

Kimseler bilmesin

Kimseler duymasın

Kimseler görmesin

Notes:

* “Köprüaltı Kemancı”, or “Fiddler Under Bridge,” was the name of a rock bar located under the old bridge (Old Galata Bridge on the Golden Horn in Istanbul). Since the bridge, together with the bar, burned down in 1992, Tangoze must have been quite young when he wrote the lyrics, or just remembering the past which did not exist anymore.

Loneliness cannot be shared*

Stay away from my nearness
This distance spoils me
Let no one approach
Loneliness cannot be shared

I remember kindly
These old friendships
Now everybody is on a different edge
Denying their own destiny

Some criticize some praise
Each one needs care
O brother, one should be uninvolved

Loneliness cannot be shared
One cannot be close to all

Have you ever been alone

In this odd world
Ah! You will understand then
Loneliness cannot be shared

A wine and a cigarette

The fall on my chest
I smell the loneliness
on dried leafs
on rain soaked earth

Have you ever been alone
In this odd world
Ah! You will understand then
Loneliness cannot be shared

Yalnızlık Paylaşılmaz

Uzak durun yakınıma

Bu mesafe beni bozar

Kimseler yanaşmasın

Yalnızlık paylaşılmaz

Inceden hatırlarım

O eski dostlukları

Şimdi herkes ayrı uçta

Kaderini inkar eder

Kimi yerer kimi över

Her biri bir ilgi bekler

Aman abi bulaşılmaz

Yalnızlık paylaşılmaz

Herkesle kaynaşılmaz

Hiç mi yalnız kalmadın
Şu garip dünyada

Ah o zaman anlarsin

Yalnızlık paylaşılmaz

Bir şarap bir sigara
Sonbahar koynumda

Yalnızlıgı kokluyorum

Kurutulmuş yapraklarda

Yağmur yemiş topraklarda

Hiç mi yalnız kalmadin

Şu garip dünyada

Ah o zaman anlarsın

Yanlızlık paylaşılmaz

Notes:

* Yalnizlik Paylasilmaz, or “Loneliness cannot be shared,” is originally from a short poem, consisting of only two lines, written by Ozdemir Asaf, a famous, modern Turkish poet. Here is the poem:

“Loneliness cannot be shared

If it were shared, it would not be loneliness”

Our situation is dire*

Gradually we passed over mountains, walls
We dived into a world far away from the lover
Mercy, mercy, we are helpless
Our situation is dire, mercy

Gradually our blood had filled with poison
Those who left the road had been preyed
Those you called friends had robed your heart
Our situation is dire, mercy

Wherever you live in, my father

Adoration, love; they are all lies

Gradually we passed over mountains, walls
We dived into a world far away from the lover

Mercy, mercy, we are helpless
Our situation is dire, mercy

Halimiz duman

giderek dagi duvari astik

yardan uzak aleme daldik

aman aman caresiz kaldik

halimiz duman aman

giderek kanimiz zehir dolmus

yoldan cikan kurda yem olmus

dost dedigin kalbini soymus

halimiz duman aman

nerde yasarsan yasa babam

sevgi ask hepsi yalan

giderek dagi duvari astik

yardan uzak aleme daldik
aman aman caresiz kaldik
halimiz duman aman

Notes:

* The band’s name, Duman, comes from this song.

Like you do

A dark road in front of me

Would you walk with me

A road with unknown ground

Would you walk next to me

Love piece of my soul

Would you listen to my heart

This is a divine love

That should not be confused with joke

My worry is you

Stay with me like that

My worry is you

Don’t ask, don’t ask

Nobody understands me like you do

Nobody believes in me like you do

Nobody mixes in blood like you do

At the very bottom of my spirit

Your voice dances

To my bended soul

Whatever you do is useless

Senin Gibi

Önümde bir karanlık yol

Benimle yürür müsün

Zemini meçhul bir yol

Yanımda yürür müsün

Gönlümün aşk parçası

Kalbimi dinler misin

İlahi bir aşktır bu

Şakayla karışmasın

Benim derdim seninle

Kal yanımda hep böyle

Benim derdim seninle

Sorma sorma

Hiç bir kimse anlamaz beni senin gibi

Hiç bir kimse inanmaz bana senin gibi

Hiç bir kimse karışmaz kana senin gibi

Ruhumun ta dibinde

Raks eder senin sesin

Vurgun yemiş gönlüme

Ne eylesen nafile

ISTANBUL*

This city lives on raki
This city sucks the cigarette in
This city lives the day
This city adores each night

This city curses people
This city beats her woman
This city sucks our blood
It is worth to die for this city

Istanbul Istanbul

Istanbul gives her respect to you all

ISTANBUL

Bu şehir rakiyla yasar
Bu şehir cigarayi çeker
Bu şehir gündüzü yasar
Bu şehir her geceyi sever

Bu şehir adami söver
Bu şehir kadinini döver
Bu şehir kanimizi emer
Bu şehir için ölmeye deger

Istanbul Istanbul

Istanbul elinden öper

Notes:

* This song is about the Oriental characteristics of Istanbul.

Renegade

We were born later.

We read, we listened,

We admired, we exaggerated.

In the end, we awoke to the case

You were born on that day.

You burned down, you broke down.

You see, how many years passed.

In the end, you renegaded from the case.

The most reverend judge, I have an objection;

The most reverend judge, I have one more word to say.

Don’t label us as lost generation!

You see, at least we are not renegade.

We were born later,

In the arms of the West.

We got used to it, we didn’t ask.

We moved along silently in the crowd.

You were born on that day.

You glowed with vodka.

When the drunkenness was over,

You converted to whiskey in silence.

Donek

Biz sonradan doğduk
Okuduk dinledik
İmrendik abarttık
Sonunda uyandık davaya

Siz o gün doğdunuz
Yakıp yıktınız
Kaç yıl geçti bak
Sonunda döndünüz davadan

Hakim bey itirazım var
Hakim bey son bir sözüm var
Kayıp gençlik deyip geçme
Bak hiç olmazsa biz dönek değiliz

Biz sonradan doğduk
Batının koynunda
Alıştık sormadık
Sürüyle yol aldık sessizce

Siz o gün doğdunuz
Votkayla coştunuz
Sarhoşluk geçince
Viskiye döndünüz sessizce

Tonight

Since the day I knew myself, friends,
I could not be an enemy to anyone

I have no doubt, my shroud is strong*
I drink tonight

Since the day I heard the voices, friends,
I have started all over again
I am in no hurry, my aim is strong
I drink… I… tonight…

I drink
I… here… tonight…

Since the day I saw you, friends

Almost each day is a festival for me
I have no tomorrow, my beloveds are strong**

I drink tonight
I drink
I… here… tonight…

Bu Aksam

kendime geldim geleli dostlar

olamam kimseye düsman
bi süphem yok kefenim saglam

icerim ben bu aksam

sesleri duydum duyali dostlar

yola ciktim yeni bastan

acelem yok hedefim saglam

icerim ben ben bu aksam

icerim ben

ben burda bu aksam

sizleri gördüm göreli dostlar
hemen hergün bana bayram

yarinim yok sevenim saglam

icerim ben bu aksam
icerim ben

ben burda bu aksam

Notes:

* It is a phrase, meaning “having no concern about the life after death.”

** “Strong” here stands for “sure”.

Honey

My love, you are my soul

Your blood has mixed with mine

Tell me from whom you run away

With no good reason you incessantly cry

My baby, you are my honey

My soul got used to your taste

Ah! My beautiful bird, flow in my blood

I am already drunk

Where are you, my love

Tell me where you are, honey

Now you are with me, honey

Tell me where you are, honey

Now you are with me, honey

Tell me where you are, honey

Now you are my soul,

My only part which has remained alive

Bal

Aşkım sen benim canımsın

Kanıma karışmış kanın

Söyle kimlerden kaçarsın

Boşuna durmadan ağlarsın

Yavrum sen benim balımsın

Tadına alışmış canım

Aah güzel kuşum gir kanıma

Ben zaten sarhoşum

Nerdesin.... sevgilim...

Söyle nerdesin bal

Artık benlesin bal

Söyle nerdesin bal

Artık benlesin bal

Söyle nerdesin bal

Artık sen benim canımsın

Canlı kalan tek yanımsın

Notes:

* This song is written for the “soul” of Tangoze, who is not with us any more. This is the reason given for why he does not sing it at the concerts. I don’t think that grief would be the only reason; maybe he had promised for something. If I were you, Kaan, I would have sung this song at each concert of mine to thank to her for being my soul, affecting me so deeply, and especially for making me compose all these beautiful songs, and write these deeply-in-love lyrics. That would be the best pray for her as well as for the loving ones that we lost forever.

Ah*

He didn’t compete

He didn’t get defeated

Obviously, he didn’t play with you

He didn’t get tense

Let no one think he is distressed again

Strangers, mocking him, should not mistake

Ah! He is enjoying himself

Ah! His happiness is enough

Ah! Do you think he cares about this world

Ah! His happiness is enough

He didn’t speak

He never heard

Obviously, he didn’t hang out with you

He didn’t get upset

Ah

Yarışmadı

Yenilmedi

Açık seçik sizle oynamadı

Gerilmedi

Sanılmasın yine basmış onu bulantılar

Yanılmasın öyle dalga geçen yabancılar

Ah eğleniyor kendi başına

Ah neşesi yeter

Ah umurunda mi sandın bu dünya

Ah neşesi yeter

Konuşmadı

Hiç duymadı

Açık seçik sizle takılmadı

Daralmadı

Notes:

* I am not sure for whom this song was written; for himself or for his friend or lover? I translated the lyrics, assuming that the one mentioned in the lyrics is him, Tangoze.

The saz in my hand satisfies my soul *

I am broke, my head is clear

The inside of me is glad, my saz is sullen

Take the most beautiful

Acquire the most eminent

Shame on you! Don’t be greedy!

Take the strength to shout out

Take the fame as well to get unruly

Take the fortune to attack

Take the god to beg for mercy

For me

The love inside of me, the saz in my hand

The saz in my hand, the love inside of me

The love inside of me, the saz in my hand

The saz in my hand satisfies my sole

Elimdeki saz yeter canıma

Cebim delik başım açık

İçim ferah sazım yanık

En güzeli senin olsun

En yücesi sana kalsın

Aşk olsun gözün doysun

Haykırmak için kudretin senin olsun

Kudurmak için söhretin de olsun

Saldırmak için servetin senin olsun

Yalvarmak için allahın senin olsun

Benim

İçimdeki aşk elimdeki saz

Elimdeki saz içimdeki aşk

İçimdeli aşk elimdeki saz

Elimdeki saz yeter canima

Notes:

* Saz is a stringed, traditional Turkish folk music instrument with a long neck. In the lyrics, Tangoze actually talks about his guitar but he names it as saz, which sounds more folkloric. Naming the guitar as saz also stresses the strong bond between Tangoze and his guitar.

Someone had broken your heart

A bastard
had betrayed you.

For years,
he had broken your heart.

A man, sharing the same fate,
could not tolerate you.

Since the day he saw you,
he had broken your heart.

We never looked behind, never got tired
You see, we are still here
Maybe we got known after going crazy
You see, we are still here
We went through many things in life

You see, we are still here
Don’t ever get upset; don’t ever cry
You see, we are still here

Kirmis kalbini

kahpe dölün soyu

ele vermiş seni
nice yıllar boyu

kırmış kalbini

aynı yolun eri

çekemezmiş seni
gördüğünden beri

kırmış kalbini

yolun ardına bakmadık yorulmadık

bak hala burdayız

belki delirdik de belirdik

bak hala burdayız

biz neler içtik neler yedik

bak hala burdayız

sen hiç üzülme hiç ağlama

bak hala burdayız

You may need to get used to

There is a man

His inside is tense
His brain, head explode
He loses himself
He doesn’t know this or that
He doesn’t see what he knows
He doesn’t believe in without seeing
He loses himself

Enough! Enough!
Are you alone?
Are you the only one?
Are you alone?
You may need to get used to this loneliness

You may need to bear with this

There is a woman
Her inside is tense
Her brain, head explode
She loses herself
She doesn’t know this or that
She doesn’t see what she knows

She doesn’t believe in without seeing
She loses herself

Enough! Enough!

Are you alone?

Are you the only one?
Are you alone?
You may need to get used to this loneliness

You may need to bear with this

Belki alışman lazım

orada bir adam var
adamın içi dapdar

beyni başı patlar

kendinden geçer...

onu bunu bilmez

bildiğini görmez

görmeden inanmaz

kendinden geçer...

yeter... yeter...
yalnız mı kaldın?

bir tek sen mi varsın?

yalnız mı kaldın?

belki alışman lazım bu yalnızlığa

belki katlanman lazım...

orada bir kadın var

kadının içi dapdar

beyni başı patlar

kendinden geçer...

onu bunu bilmez

bildigini gormez

görmeden inanmaz

kendinden geçer...

yeter... yeter...
yalnız mı kaldın?
bir tek sen mi varsın?

yalnız mı kaldın?

belki alışman lazım bu yalnızlığa

belki katlanman lazım...

There is no meaning

They had broken up the road passing through wisdom.

Do I walk on it? No!

Ah! Who had they burned in this land?

Do you know, friend?

They had burned the road passing through respect.

Do I walk on it? No!

Ah! Who had they hung in this land?

Do you know, friend?

They had hung the road passing through my left side.

Do I walk on it? No!

Who had they buried in the land next door?

Do you know, friend?

They had buried the road passing through the heart.

Do I walk on it? No!

Who had they cut in this land?

Do you know, friend?

They had cut the road passing through the arts.

Do I walk on it? No!

Who had they thrown from that bridge?

Do you know, friend?

There is no meaning,

No meaning to this world.

There is no meaning,

No meaning to this negligence.

Manasi Yok

akıldan geçen yolu kazmışlar
ben geçer miyim yok

ah bu diyarda kimi yakmışlar
haberin var mı koç
saygıdan geçen yolu yakmışlar
ben geçer miyim yok

ah bu diyarda kimi asmışlar
haberin var mı koç
solumdan geçen yolu asmışlar
ben geçer miyim yok

komşu toprağa kimi gömmüşler
haberin var mı koç
gönülden geçen yolu gömmüşler
ben geçer miyim yok

ah bu diyarda kimi kesmişler
haberin var mı koç
sanattan geçen yolu kesmişler
ben geçer miyim

karşı köprüden kimi atmışlar
haberin var mı koç

manası yoktur
yok bu alemin
manası yoktur
yok bu gafletin

A story

One of them stepped on ‘80,

The other, ‘95.

How could this happen, friend?

How could the entire nation get sacrificed?

One of them advocates Arabs,

The other, foreign mandate.

How could this happen, friend?

How could the entire nation get deceived?

As one of them pulls from the right,

The other, from the left;

As one of them interferes with the laws,

The other, with the vault;

Once upon a time, we became a story

A story again

Masal

Biri basmış 80e
Ötekisi 95
Aga böyle olmaz ki
Koca millet harcanmaz ki

Biri arap tayfası
Ötekisi gavur mandası
Aga böyle olmaz ki
Koca millet aldanmaz ki vay

Biri sağdan
Biri soldan asılınca
Biri yasaya
Biri kasaya karışınca

Evvel zaman içinde masal olduk
Masal olduk yine

You don’t know, I am dying

Don’t look at me that intensely,
We cannot have anything common.

You have never been loved that much,
I can see this in your eyes.

You don’t know, I am dying

Don’t ask me where I am from
What I drink, what I wear
Let my suffer be your cure
I just sing from my heart

You don’t know, I am dying

My crazy heart is uncontrollable again,
I am keeping you under pressure.
A life is wasted again,
I’m kissing in its eyes.*

You don’t know, I am dying
You don’t know, I am dying

As you arrive, I am leaving
I don’t have a cure, I am dying
As breaking away, I am drinking
You don’t know, I am dying

Haberin yok, ölüyorum

bakma bana öyle derin

işim olmaz senle benim

hiç bu kadar sevilmedin

gözlerinden okuyorum

haberin yok, ölüyorum

sorma bana nerelisin

ne içersin ne giyersin

derdim sana derman olsun

ben gönülden okuyorum

haberin yok ölüyorum

azdı yine deli gönül

üzerine geliyorum

geçti yine boş bir ömür

gözlerinden öpüyorum

haberin yok ölüyorum

haberin yok ölüyorum

sen gelirken ben gidiyorum

dermanım yok ben ölüyorum

ayrılırken ben içiyorum

haberin yok ben ölüyorum.

Notes:

* “Kissing in someone’s eyes” means “saying goodbye one last time before leaving them behind.”

The Land of the Free

What kind of reason is that?

Again you’ve been running after oil.

What kind of philosophy is that?

Again you fucked it up!

The land of the free,

The representative of justice,

Rescue us from the terrorists!

Does it worth taking that many lives?

Tell me whether so much pain could be eased!

Do these folks surrender?

Tell me whether they erase you from their memories!

The land of the free,

The representative of justice,

Rescue us from the terrorists!

Ozgurlugun Ulkesi

bu ne biçim bahane
yine düştün petrolün peşine
bu ne biçim felsefe
yine sıçtın insanın içine

özgürlüğün ülkesi!
adaletin temsilcisi!
teröristlerden kurtar bizi!

bu kadar cana değer mi
bu kadar acı diner mi söyle!
bu adamlar siner mi
kafadan seni siler mi söyle!

özgürlüğün ülkesi
adaletin temsilcisi
teröristlerden kurtar bizi!

From near me

I couldn’t like this day at all

I couldn’t like it from the beginning

I couldn’t see how it passed

From near me

From all over me

I couldn’t be trapped

I couldn’t be, because of my wisdom

I chased away my lover

From near me

From all over me

I didn’t lived this day

I didn’t, because of my obstinate

I could not see how she passed

From near me,

From all over me

Don’t let your hands reach,

Keep them away, I said,

Don’t ever let them touch.

Don’t let whatever I dream on befit me

I have no faith!

Yanibasimdan

sevemedim ben bu günü
sevemedim başından
göremedim geçtiğini
yanıbaşımdan
her yanımdan

gelemedim ben oyuna
gelemedim yaşımdan
kovaladım sevdiğimi
yanıbaşımdan
her yanımdan

yaşamadım ben bu günü
yaşamadım inadımdan
göremedim geçtiğini
yanıbaşımdan
her yanımdan

ellerin uzanmasın
uzak dursun dedim
sakın dokunmasın
hayal ettiklerim bana yakışmasın
inancım yok benim

My most beautiful day and night

I’ve improvised songs.

I’ve played turkus too.*

I’ve drunk and danced on stage.

I’ve believed in with all my heart.

Choose your song, come along with me;

Let’s shout it together!

You would just make fun of me.

I didn’t shake your hand when you offer it.

I gave you a hug, instead.

You’ve come to the front by fighting others, never got tired.

You’ve believed in with all your heart.

Choose your song, come along with me;

Let’s shout it together!

You would just make fun of me.

My most beautiful day and night are with you.

Such marvelous love!

My most beautiful day is tonight.

I play and sing for fun.

En guzel gunum gecem

kafadan attım salladım
türkülerden de çaldım
sahnelere çıkıp içtim oynadım ben
gönülden inandım

şarkını seç gel benimle
beraber bağıralım
dalganı geç sen benimle

elini verdin sıkmadım
boynundan sarıldım
tekme tokat öne geçtin bıkmadın sen
gönülden inandın

şarkını seç gel benimle
beraber bağıralım
dalganı geç sen benimle

en güzel günüm gecem sizinle
bu nasıl sevgidir böyle
en güzel günüm bu gece
çalarım söylerim keyfe

kafadan attım salladım
türkülerden de çaldım
sahnelere çıkıp içtim oynadım ben
gönülden inandım

şarkını seç gel benimle
beraber bağıralım
dalganı geç sen benimle

From the heart

I thought that I fell in love.

I was thinking that I was loved.

Then I awoke;

In the end, I did understand

I got separated

I suffered a lot

Then I awoke;

In the end, I did understand

If you love someone with all your heart

You should let your mind fly

Whoever you want to see next to you,

You should first find them inside.

Where is my mind?

I lost it with you.

Don’t ask me how it is

That shouldn’t be asked to anyone

If you love someone with all your heart

You should let your mind fly

Whoever you want next to you

You should first find them inside.

Yurekten

sevdim sandım
sevildim sanardım
sonra uyandım
sonunda ben anladım

ayrı kaldım
ayıldım bayıldım
sonra uyandım
sonunda ben anladım

öyle yürekten seviyorsan
aklı başından atacaksın
kimi yanında arıyorsan
önce içinde bulacaksın

aklım nerde
kaçırdım seninle
sorma ne halde
sorulmaz bu kimseye

öyle yürekten seviyorsan
aklı başından atacaksın
kimi yanında arıyorsan
önce içinde bulacaksın

Mercy, mercy!

You ask where it goes, leaving everything behind

Who knows how you can always stay silent

You talk uselessly without knowing

Time passes, flowing like water

You’ve gallivanted. Mercy, mercy!

You’ve been a saz; you’ve been a word. Mercy, mercy! *

Gradually you’ve made us sad, time;

Gradually you’ve made us sad, time!

You’ve written; you’ve crossed out. Mercy, mercy, mercy!

You’ve been a fine trace. Mercy, mercy, mercy!

You’ve made us line up, time;

You’ve made us line up, time!

As taking a new step, each time after running away,

As suffering to the very bottom,

As going away, keeping everything to yourself

Time passes, flowing like water

You’ve gallivanted. Mercy, mercy!

You’ve been a saz; you’ve been a word. Mercy, mercy!

Gradually you’ve made us sad, time;

Gradually you’ve made us sad, time!

You’ve written; you’ve crossed out. Mercy, mercy, mercy!

You’ve been a fine trace. Mercy, mercy, mercy!

You’ve made us line up, time;

You’ve made us line up, time!

Aman aman

nereye gider başını alıp, sorarsın
kim bilir, durmadan nasıl susarsın
bilmeden boşuna atıp tutarsın
su gibi akıp geçer zaman

gezdin tozdun aman aman aman
sazdın sözdün aman aman aman
giderek üzdün bizi zaman
giderek üzdün bizi zaman

yazdın çizdin aman aman aman
incecik izdin aman aman aman
sıraya dizdin bizi zaman
sıraya dizdin bizi zaman

hep kaçıp, yeni bir adım atarken
dibine kadar, çileye batıp çıkarken
içine atıp atıp, yoluna basıp giderken
su gibi akıp geçer zaman

gezdin tozdun aman aman aman
sazdın sözdün aman aman aman
giderek üzdün bizi zaman
giderek üzdün bizi zaman

yazdın çizdin aman aman aman
incecik izdin aman aman aman
sıraya dizdin bizi zaman
sıraya dizdin bizi zaman

I should have simply smelled it

I am a grandson of Adam,

And alive as well as vigorous.

I grasped a fruit in the forbidden forest

I was not going to taste it;

I should have simply smelled it!

Come along, let’s sing a turku,*

Let’s dance together.

If you don’t get it, what can we do?

You were not going to come here;

You should have simply smelled it.

You are in an odd competition,

And in a privileged position as well as in comfort.

Then why do you cry?

You were not going to take the award;

You should have simply smelled it.

I was not going to taste it;

I should have simply smelled it!

When my crazy heart glowed for love,

I took a flower in my arms.

I fell from the top

I was not going to fall in love;

I should have simply smelled it.

The heart of a loving one is dire,

And dark as well as warm.

That kind of love is absurd.

You were not going to inhale it;

You should have simply smelled it!

I was not going to taste it;

I should have simply smelled it!

Sadece Koklayacaktim

ben ademin torunuyum
hem deliyim hem doluyum
yasak ormandan yem kaptım
tadına bakmayacaktım
sadece koklayacaktım

gel bir türkü söyleyelim
hep beraber oynayalım
anlamazsan neyleyelim
buraya gelmeyecektin
sadece koklayacaktın

bir acaip yarıştasın
hem öndesin hem rahatsın
o zaman ne için ağlarsın
ödülü almayacaktın
sadece koklayacaktın

tadına bakmayacaktım
sadece koklayacaktım

deli gönlüm kaynayınca
bir çiçek aldım koynuma
tepelerden düştüm takla
aşık olmayacaktım
sadece koklayacaktım

sevenin gönlü dumandır
hem karanlık hem sıcaktır
böyle sevda akla ziyandır
içine çekmeyecektin
sadece koklayacaktın

tadına bakmayacaktım
sadece koklayacaktım

Don’t believe even if you see in your dream

Friend, that’s not you

What appears is just your clothes

Friend, why are you resented?

I’ve got used to you, mixed with you

Don’t believe even if you see in your dream

Friend, that’s not you

What’s known is just your name

Friend, why did you change your heart?

I’ve got used to you, mixed with you

Don’t believe even if you see in your dream

Friend, that’s not you

What’s alive is just your idea

Friend, why are you resented?

I’ve got used to you, mixed with you

Don’t believe even if you see in your dream

Don’t ever think that we accept your sovereignty

We come and get what we deserve by force

You cannot even dare to deny

Don’t believe even if you see in your dream

Ruyanda gorsen inanma

arkadaş sen bu değilsin
görünüş sadece giysin
arkadaş niye gücendin
alıştım karıştım ben sana
rüyanda görsen inanma

arkadaş sen bu değildin
bilinen sadece ismin
arkadaş niye değiştin
alıştım karıştım ben sana
rüyanda görsen inanma

arkadaş sen bu değilsin
yaşayan sadece fikrin
arkadaş niye gücendin
alıştım karıştım ben sana
rüyanda görsen inanma

sana boynumuzu eğeriz sanma
hakkımızı gelir alırız zorla
saklayacak yüzün yok yok
rüyanda görsen inanma

What happened, happened

I got tired, I got bored,

While running after you.

I don’t care, my beauty,

I don’t buy what you say.

This was forbidden, that was sin

Let her talk as she wishes

Don’t insist, my beauty

I don’t get involved with you

None of you received wisdom

I could never comprehend your way

But I couldn’t escape, which was my mistake.

What happened, happened, now everything is a lie

I got tense, I got weary,

While running away from you.

I don’t care, my beauty,

Keep away my nearness

This was harm, that was loss

Let her talk as she wishes

Is it in our hands, my beauty,

I got used to the pain

Gecmis olsun

yoruldum sıkıldım
peşinden koşa koşa
ben anlamam güzelim
sen anlat külahıma

yasakmış günahmış
konuşsun doya doya
zorlama güzelim
karışmam aranıza

aranızdan çıkmadı bir adam
yolunuza ermedi hiç kafam
kaçamadım o da benim hatam
geçmiş olsun şimdi her şey yalan

daraldım usandım
elinden kaça kaça
ben anlamam güzeli
uzak dur yakınıma

zararmış ziyanmış
konuşsun doya doya
elde mi güzelim
alıştım acısına
