My students utilized blogs in third semester intermediate German as a means of journaling for class.  They could focus on their everyday life or on various aspects of German  culture.  Some were even fortunate enough to have Germans find their sites and comment on them.  Overall, I believe this was a very positive experience. 

I found student blogging to be a fascinating way to promote the activity of journaling, one which is present in many language classes.  It gave students a means of creatively utilizing the resources of the entire Internet for expressing themselves.  By showing them the basics of blogging via my own examples, and through the German they learned in in-class instruction, the students were free to explore their own interests in the language they were learning.
