Comment on "Handheld Devices Pilot"

Thanks for posting this, Mairéad. Two minor nitpicks:

* The Nokia device is the N-810, not N-180.

* The URL for the wiki is http://wikispaces.psu.edu/display/libhandheldpilot/Home. The old name, confluence.et-test.psu.edu, still works, but we're encouraging people to use the new name (since it's no longer a test!).

Good luck with the testing. It was great to work with this group on this project.

- Derek Morr

I solved the same problem the same way at the EMS library. A little IT knowledge makes you seem like a magician.

It's always nice to have a contact and champion! A knowledgeable contact is always an asset and can frequently save time overall. At the least, it would be useful to have a bulletin board-type place where we could check out existing concerns and their status. I'm not talking about Helpdesk problems but longer-term questions that languish in the current Helpdesk system of handling questions.

- Linda Musser

I think that the idea of Subject Heads having an IT liaison is a great, preferably someone who could advocate our concerns to both DLT and I-Tech, and someone who speaks enough tech talk to communicate effectively.

- Daniel Mack (Dan)

Comment on "The New ITS"

I have been trying to parse for the past several months the question: If I had a blog would anybody read it? I'm sure nobody cares what I did at the Inn or BBQ last night, or if I ate breakfast like some tend to ramble. And frankly this is what has increased my reluctance to have my own. (I also realize I don't have to write about that junk)

I have come to the conclusion we (DLT Infrastructure) may be best served by a blog to which we could all contribute. This in no way suggests that I would mind if individuals choose to blog, but by nature we have trouble documenting system issue and procedures let alone blogging! (right?)

I believe we are doing some interesting investigations into Content Addressable Storage (CAS) as well as the eXtensible Access Method (XAM) Standard. http://www.snia.org/xam/home
We also are sharing ideas and road trips with folks from AIS in helping shape our next storage decisions.

We are part of some great collaborative efforts with TLT in creating a more transparent environment for the students using our public computers in the libraries as well as ASET with power and cooling challenges and disaster recovery.

This reinforces my commitment to a blog or other communication methods. I'm interested in seeing the results from the newly charged group addressing these issues to see if a blog or a combination of methods are best suited.

I think we're very lucky to have such an open and collaborative environment in ITS and DLT!

- Mark

Comment on "Meeting with University Libraries Subject Heads, March 8, 2007"

My comment does not relate to the conversation recorded in Mairead's entry, but I hope it is a useful extention of it. In other meetings related to re-thinking the services offered on the first floor of Pattee/Paterno, one topic that has come up more than once is mobile communications and computing. Providing good service in this extremely complex building complex during times of increasing budget restraints is pointing to a need to greater mobility of the service providers. Perhaps a simple and memorable way to state our goal might be: "We should be at least as mobile as our patrons." Even the people who sell me blue jeans often have a telecom system in their ear that allows them to talk with other staff and something on their hip they can use to check their stock. With these types of devices (and perhaps a pair of rollerblades) it might be possible for a much smaller team of staff to run the complex at odd hours.

Thanks,

"Don't know what's going on with the wiki and Zope upgrade? Justin?"

Mairead, Joni was able to successfully complete the upgrade for Zope, and now Lance is working on adding Web Access to the site for authentication, we should be up and running in no time! The Wiki is alive and well although I don't think anyone is utilizing it.

- Justin Patterson

I'm thrilled you enjoyed the Symposium ... the number of new connections it has created has blown my mind. I can honestly say it was just what we needed to move into the next round of conversations with faculty, staff, and students here at PSU. It has shown me that faculty are ready to embrace new and emerging ways to connect with their students.

- Cole Camplese

I have requests from Sylvia and Binky from I-Tech to join the group, but I'd also like to get Libraries presence (perhaps librarian Emily Rimland and new librarian John Meier, who both seem interested in web 2.0 and are intune with a lot of these forward-thinking technologies).

Who would you recommend from DLT? We need people who are familiar with the servers etc. so we know what we can realistically consider for local use. I think we would also initially get together with Jim Leous and his group to develop a good starting point and go from there. I'm going to write up some ideas for our scope, but beyond even Wikis and blogs, I think we need to look at other potential emerging technologies that could benefit us.

Does this seem reasonable?
