Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.
-Peter Drucker
I think this is a pretty powerful quote, especially for a class like PSEL. We want to all believe that anyone can be a good leader, that we just need to be happy and positive. There is this misplaced idea that leadership just means being nice to people and listening to their feedback once in awhile.
Each situation is different, but often times leadership means being disliked, making tough decisions, being steadfast despite other people's objections. Because leadership requirements change from situation to situation and from person to person, we cannot classify leadership as displaying certain characteristics, but rather by obtaining results. Furthermore, great leaders are able to obtain results while still following certain moral or social standards.
I do like this quote because it does add the competitiveness aspect back to leadership. Its like when you are younger and they tell you that as long as you try, you are a winner. As you get older, you find that isn't always the case. Leadership is the same way. Its good to be positive and work on leadership characteristics, but when it comes down to it... leaders must get results.
