The Electric Toothbrush Redesign project taken on by Team X-Treme was a fun but challenging project nonetheless. Long hours and hard work was put into coming up with the final design that will prove to be very successful. We have taken all of our customer needs, which were gathered from the interviews, and we were able to apply all of them to our new design. Some very unique features that we put into our new product were the “X-Treme Stand”, which allows the brush to stay in an up-right position to prevent a buildup of dust, and a bristle cover which is used to keep the bristles pristine while the brush is not being used.
The first thing we did to revamp our toothbrush was switching out the lithium batteries to the more high powered Nickel Cadmium batteries which put out 7.5V with an expected 600 mAH. With the increased battery life we were able to add an extra set of bristle on the head of the toothbrush that would have a vertical motion to increase cleaning effectiveness without the loss of days used. Another feature we added to our new toothbrush was attachments. We have various attachments, such as a flosser, that can be switched out very easily. In the head of the toothbrush we added a rubber pad to cut down on the noise level and we were able to reach an incredible 59.6db. Since we decided to make our product appealing to everyone, rather than the target audience of children, we redesigned the look of the toothbrush. We took the soccer ball out and gave the toothbrush a simplistic, but efficient, rectangular design which allowed us to decrease the size and weight of it. This rectangular design also allowed us to place a grip all along the handle for improved ergonomics. The improvements were not made for aesthetic or ergonomic improvements only, the slender outer shell increased the quality of the toothbrush because there were no awkward surfaces that had to be dealt with. Finally, the revamped toothbrush’s final design came out to be very cost effective. With a price raise of only $2.00 our consumers will be very satisfied.

The reason for the slight increase in price for the resigned toothbrush was due to the stand, the rubber grip that was added, second set of bristles, and also the addition of a system to make the head detachable. The increase in weight was caused by the different type of batteries we used and also the addition of the grip and second set of bristles added to the mass of the toothbrush. The change in height was minimal and it was done to accommodate for the larger variety of our target audience. The change in depth and width was done by removing the soccer ball from the first toothbrush; this served no purpose other than aesthetics. The addition of the second set of bristles was added to increase the cleaning effectiveness of the toothbrush. The vertical motion applied with the oscillating motion work together to remove plaque from the hard to reach places. The battery life was extended because we switched from the lithium batteries to the more high powered Nickel Cadmium batteries. Adding the rubber grip and switching the ergonomics to appeal to all audiences the quality of the toothbrush is better and more reliable.
