      Fantasy Society

The start of the phenomena known as fantasy sports all started in the 1980s.  The creation of leagues slowly caught on after that year and grew to become something that has revolutionized an already dominate industry. The influence fantasy sports has stretches from the media into the society of American culture and now has sky rocketed to new heights.  Fantasy sports have caused a new age of sport entertainment that has hit us like a freight train these past ten years.

The influence fantasy sports have on the media is one that transcends multiple aspects of the entertainment industry.  What use to be only shows that spoke of upcoming games and stories that transpire on a daily basis now have sections or entire programs dedicated to fantasy match ups and other aspects of the game. Fantasy sports have developed a cult following that has made networks take notice. With the millions of players and the hundreds of websites carrying the game it has become bigger than ever.  Television, radio and the internet now all have sections dedicated to the distribution of fantasy news and trends that offer an advantage to players seeking an edge.  The media industry notices this aspect of a fictional game and uses it to there advantage to make fantasy sports larger by the year.

The effect that fantasy sports have on the American society is one that has made a gargantuan industry even larger.  The introduction of fantasy sports has made it more essential that the average player watch sports daily.  For example if it is football season and the Jacksonville Jaguars are playing the Buffalo Bills, a game that traditionally would not draw as much of a crowd or television attention, and a player "owns" Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, that player is now more interested to watch that game due to the fact that it directly influences his team and his standing in a fantasy sports league.  This occurrence is one of many ideas that have led to the growth of fantasy sports and has also increased popularity and viewing of sporting events n a daily basis.

The effect that fantasy sports has on the media and society of sports is one that cannot go unnoticed.  This game that started as small as an idea can has now grown to a juggernaut that is forcing growth in an already behemoth industry. The sporting industry is growing more and more by the year and the key to its growth lies in the coverage it gets from media sources and society's take on how to keep them interested. Sport and all its forms, such as fantasy games, has evolved with the times to make it the force it continues to be today.
