Comeback of Reading Premium Beer

Reading Premium beer was last made in 1976.  It is set to make its comeback on its 30th anniversary.  “Classic local suds making a comeback under new brewmasters”, by Christopher Hinz can be found in the Business section of the Reading Eagle on October 8, 2006.

Legacy Brewing Company decided in May to try to win the trademarks of the former Reading Brewing Company, located at Ninth and Laurel Streets in Reading, PA, which was shut down in 1976 due to tough competition.  Legacy plans to launch Reading Premium Beer by December 1, 2006.  They plan to launch draft beer at 15 local bars and restaurants.  Legacy plans to hit a wider market with bottles and cans in early summer.  To market Reading Premium, an everyday beer,  Legacy will create a separate entity, Reading Brewing Company.

Scott E. Baver, president of the Legacy Brewing Co. at Canal Street, was able to recreate the original recipe for Reading Premium Beer.  The original recipe was not able to be found, but Baver knew the original ingredients, which included Canadian six-row barley, German hops, and an American lager yeast strain.  From here, Baver was able to recreate the original Reading Premium recipe.

By gaining the trademarks to Reading Premium Beer and reconstructing the original recipe, Legacy Brewing Company is able to reintroduce  a local favorite and possibly create an even larger demand.  This is a great thing for Reading.  Not only is the original recipe being introduced, but more  jobs are being introduced.  Legacy Brewing Company opened in 2003, and with the addition of Reading Premium they will hit a completely new market and be able to expand.

The reintroduction of Reading Premium Beer has a positive effect on Business in Reading.  The beer was a very popular everyday beer 30 years ago, and bringing it back will once again grab that market.  It will also grab the market of the children who heard stories of their fathers drinking or producing this local beer.
