The more I ponder the twelfth picture (the one with the "unknown youth"), it doesn't comfortably sit with me that it is my familiar, beloved Oma Mary. Is it Tanta Katja, with the recently late Herman ("Reck")?

- Mary

Pam, yes it seems very surreal to me, too, that I won't get that e-mail from him or enjoy his wit and insights into society. Ten months later, it is also so strange not to expect updates from Dad. When you organize the next reunion, I will totally attend!

- Mary

I can't grasp that Reck will not have a letter in the next letter round! His insight into getting the next generation of cousins to keep the Rundbrief going was a gift. I wasn't there but, I learned that the Rundbrief reunion in Kansas organized by Heinz was a delight--I'm imagining another reunion for the next generation one day.

- Pam Krause Sittler

Reck was one of two people who had encouraged me to acquire a computer. Before that he would write snailmail letters to me. Once I'd actually acquired my own computer and learned to operate it, I began to enjoy frequent e-mails from Reck, each of which I answered. Now that he's no longer sending those, I miss them terribly!

- Metta Ann (Janzen( Lieb

I am saddened by the death of Reck even though I like you only met him that time in Philly. I have been noting the many recent messages transferred through Metta's emails and the rundbrief. I feel an emotional attachement because of this.

What a lovely remembrance of grandma. Actually Grandmas's art lessons as a young person were not at the same time as later art lessons such as tole painting and painting on glass. Those came after I was already gone from home.

Looking forward to receivining the rundbrief. My biggest hole is information and pictures of Cornelius Krause, and his family. I have some of his brother Jacob, from Joan Braun. I don't have very good ones of Carl and Agatha Rempel either, butI do have a couple.

Mary

I hope the part I planted survives the incredible heat wave we are having here as chronicled on FaceBook. I still have all manner of iris from the Goldenrod house as the other "heritage cultivars". For years I had a lof of the Hillsboro bamboo but that stuff is too invasive...I finally killed it off.

- Pete Janzen

Hi Karen: I believe you are the one who wrote to me about 10 years ago asking for general family information-- I was overwhelmed at the time & didn't know where to start. You only gave your address & no phone number or email address which I would have preferred. Really glad you are in The Rundbrief now!!!! -Pam Sittler in Ontario

- Pam Sittler

Mary Dirks Janzen was the younger half sister of my grandmother Susanna Krause Rempel. When Susanna's father died just before they moved from Kleefeld to Gnadenfeld (the wagon was all packed, and Kornelius Krause died suddenly), the widow Agatha Dueck Krause with her 4 young children Cornelius, Jacob, Susanna (my grandmother) and Agatha moved to Gnadenfeld. Later widow Agatha Dueck Krause married the farm manager Heinrich Dirks, and they had 3 more children Marie (Mary), Heinrich (Heinz),and Katharina (Katja) Dirks. I have a picture of the Krause family before they moved to Gnadedfeld.

I am so happy to have found Mary Janzen's blog!

Mary hons,

I asked my support group tonight about the word schput. It seems that the Germans from Germany, (Ernie), the Low Germans and the HIgh Germans and the Schweitzedeitch from Moundridge all use this word. I know I grew up with this word as we used it often at home. By the way I read "A Complicated Kindness" by Miriam Toews.

- Mom hons

Dear Mary,

I have on my desk an old typed and spiral-bound book with a blue cover and the words "The Batum Story" across it. I was hoping to get hold of the compiler, who I suspect is Mary Senior :). I have a few questions for you regarding the old book and your new edition of it, but it's probably best to discuss it over e-mail. Could you send a note to thomson.rachel AT gmail.com? I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Mary I sure recall those chicken with corn-flake crumb dinners on Sundays also. I still have those big bowls she would serve the food in. It fell to Deb and I to clean out her aprtment when she went to the nursing home. Another thing she just never threw away was plastic bags of any kind. She had pounds and pounds of them, all sorted, bundled and wrapped. And a massive collection of spices and such. I think we still have a few cans of the spices in packaging that hasn't been used in many decades. Hard to throw that sort of thing away. I spent a lot of money to refurbish her sewing machine and I refinished the cabinet. We gave it to Victoria a few months back, so it has a good home.
