Finding Your Niche

I just took part in a strategy conversation about the future of network services with a few of the relevant stakeholder groups here at Penn State. We were talking about disruptive technologies when I said something to the effect of:

When I can put a 3G cellular modem in my laptop with an unlimited data plan and use services from providers like Skype for voice and Hulu for video — effectively completing the triple play — why would I ever want to use the services the University provides?

I am certain that some felt I was being flip, but there is an answer to my question, and in that answer is the definition of the niche that we need to fill. It is our value added to the University. It is our mission.
