Doing Good

The report of the Virginia Tech Review Panel came out yesterday. It is 247 pages long and contains 93 specific recommendations. I would summarize my take-away like this:

  • Do not let the existence of a procedure, policy, or even a law — no matter how well intentioned — be an excuse to not use your brain.

To apply that to IT folks:

  • Do not build systems that prevent people from using their brains.

I am trying to phrase things positively, because they are easier to understand, so let me turn that around:

  • IT people should build systems that enable and encourage people to use their brains.
