Red Color-News Soldier

The world is a richer place for the efforts of those who have sought to document the various social and cultural transformations that have taken place around the globe during the twentieth century. One must only think of A.J. Lieblings dispatches from Europe during the World War II or Robert Capas images of the Spanish Civil War to be reminded of the importance of such materials. This website pays homage to the work of another such dedicated individual, Li Zhengsheng, who took it upon himself to document the Cultural Revolution in China through photographs. This fine online exhibit includes some of the thousands of images Zhengsheng took from 1964 to 1976. The contents are divided into five chronological sections, such as Revolution is Not a Dinner Party. Within each section, visitors can view a number of images, including photographs of peasant women at work on an irrigation project and a gathering of Communist party officials who met to mourn the death of Chairman Mao.

Conflict Map

http://www.nobel.se/peace/educational/conflictmap/

Visualizing the nature of various conflicts across the world over the course of history is quite a challenge, and the Nobel e-Museum offers this rather compelling way to think about the past century or so of such engagements.  Utilizing the Schockwave application, this interactive map provides answers to such question as Where did these wars take place?, Have some regions experienced more wars than others?, and Who were the main protagonists in these conflicts? A tall order to be sure, but the map succeeds nobly, and accomplishes its educational task by organizing each conflict into one of three categories (represented on the map by a small conflagration), and offering a brief explanation about each conflict as well. Additionally, the map also provides statistical information on the geographical distribution of Peace Prize laureates and nominees from the period 1901 to 2001, along with providing aggregate numbers of the total nominations, divided into seven geographical regions.

International Foundation for Election Systems

http://www.ifes.org/

Since 1987, the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) has provided technical assistance in all areas of election administration and election management. IFES is a non-profit non-governmental organization which has also been a part of the electoral process in over 100 countries over the past fifteen years. On the site, visitors can learn about the foundation's ongoing research projects, which revolve around a number of thematic issues such as civil society, rule of law and governance, and many others. Visitors may also be interested in the various employment opportunities and upcoming lectures and related events. The publication area is quite extensive as well, as it includes access to the tri-annually published magazine, _Elections Today_, and a number of other helpful white papers, reports, and surveys, such as Public Opinion in Ukraine and the annual reports.
