This course introduces the elements of mineralogy and petrology, including crystallography, crystal chemistry, and optical mineralogy, plus the origin, occurrence, and identification of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. Students will learn how to use a petrographic microscope to identify minerals and rocks.  The occurrence of different rock types will be introduced in the context of the tectonic settings in which they form.  This course has  a weekly laboratory practical and one or more required field trips for which a fee may be charged to the student.
Prerequisites: Chem 110, Geosc 001 or 020
