Matthew Hartzell
Master's Candidate, Department of Geography, Pennsylvania State University
I spent my childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area. Undergrad was at Harvard, where I majored in History. I've been employed as a substitute teacher, traffic counter, private tutor, librarian, cartographer, travel writer, and video store guy.
Right now I'm at Penn State getting a Master's degree in geography! My interests in geography include: tourism, urban geography, historical geography, cartography, transportation, development and developing world geography, social justice, human rights, race, gender, culture, nationalism, ethnicity, and poverty.
I am writing my Master's Thesis on the links between colonial-era tourism and geographic exploration and present-day tourism in the Indian Himalaya. I spent the summer of 2007 in India doing fieldwork.
After I get my Masters degree I would like to:
Travel more
Live in another country (probably Japan, Korea, or China) and learn the language there
Work as a teach (English or Social studies)
Work as an urban planner
Work in the nonprofit sector
Work in the organic and natural food industry
Work as a waiter
This is where I have traveled:
