Recognize Our Traps |
Traps placed by West Nile Virus Program staff, and will usually be picked up the following day. Staff may also be observed collecting larvae samples from standing water, using ladles. If you should come upon a trap, please do not tamper with it. These traps are integral to helping us keep you safer. |

This is a standard CO2 baited mosquito trap. The thermos-like casing that holds the dry ice is blue with a white lid. The trap is accompanied with a net and a battery pack, which is needed to work the fan. It is generally hung two to five feet from the ground, usually from a tree branch. The battery rests on the ground.

Other variations on the CO2 trap would be the black EVS trap (on left) or our homemade CO2 trap (below) made from PVC pipe. |
This is a standard gravid mosquito trap (like a tackle box on a tray of dirty water) and a homemade gravid mosquito trap (a bucket of dirty water with PVC pipe sticking out the side). “Stink-water” is poured into the bottom and is used to attract mosquitoes. They are generally placed on the ground. These are our most commonly used traps.

This is a Faye-Prince trap. It is hung at knee-height and a thermos of dry ice is hung nearby to attract mosquitoes. A battery is also used with this. |
All traps should have identification labels.
All WNV personnel carry ID.
