2 mosquito samples were found to contain mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus.  One sample was taken in Palmyra Borough.  The other was taken in North Londonderry Township.  In both cases the West Nile Program is conducting further surveillance and mosquito control in the area while continuing regular surveillance and control throughout the county.

To prevent West Nile Virus remember to:

Get rid of water that sits in containers of any size for more than a week.

Add fish or a mosquito larvae pesticide to standing water that cannot be removed.

Use a repellant if you are outside in the evening or in an area with a large mosquito population.

Vaccinate horses.

Correction:  due to the availability of more efficient equipment, all three control activities will now be conducted on Wednesday night.

Truck or ATV mounted Ultra Low Volume fogging for adult mosquitoes is scheduled, weather permitting, for the evening of Wednesday the 10th at

- the Rockledge development in North Londonderry Township

- Palm City Park in South Annville Township

- Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority in North Lebanon Township

The equipment dispenses Biomist 3 + 15, a permethrin product, at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre.

In each case no virus was found in mosquito samples, but relatively high populations of mosquitoes that commonly carry West Nile virus have been found.  By reducing mosquito populations, the risk for mosquitoes spreading West Nile from bird to bird and from birds to people is reduced.

This serves as a reminder that mosquitoes are out and about.

People can lower their own personal risk by:

- wearing repellant when out in the evenings

- keeping open doors and windows screened

- vaccinating horses

And we can all do our part to reduce mosquitoes by keeping an eye out for water that sits for more than a week.

-roof gutters
