TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Graduate Teaching Assistant, Department of Germanic & Slavic Languages, Penn State University, University Park, PA, USA.  August 2002-present.  Instructor of record for beginner, intermediate,  and advanced (1st-4th semester) German foreign language courses and business German.  Teaching assistant for German civilization/culture  course.  Implementing practical knowledge of Austrian and German language and culture with research interests in second language acquisition, teaching with technology, computer-assisted language learning and online literacy. Contributions to syllabus development and materials design.

ESL Instructor, Intensive English Communication Program (IECP), Penn State University, University Park, PA, USA.  Summer 2001, 2002, 2007.  Taught beginning to high intermediate courses in writing, reading/vocabulary, speaking/listening and gramamr to international students.  Co-organizer and ESL instructor for short-term stay summer group.

ESL Instructor, Intensive English Program (IEP), City University (Bellevue, WA), Bratislava, Slovakia site. September 1996—June 2000. Taught full-time university preparation courses to international students. Significant contributions to syllabus revisions, curriculum guide.

Academic Coordinator / EFL Instructor, “English in Action!” summer camp, Young Austria, Ges.m.b.H., Salzburg, Austria. Summers:  1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999.  Leadership in planning, organizing and implementing summer EFL program and courses  for multiple two-week sessions for 45-90 international youth. Gained pedagogic and teaching skills,  working with international staff.

English Teaching Assistant, Fulbright Commission and Austrian-American Educational Commission, Vienna, Austria.  October 1, 1993—May 31, 1994.  Worked with ten Austrian English teachers to design and teach 13 English classes in two secondary schools in Eisenstadt, Austria.  Acquired valuable teaching experience, flexibility, and knowledge of Austrian school system and appreciation of Austrian culture.

 

OTHER ACADEMIC PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Manager, Intensive English Program (IEP), City University (Bellevue, WA), Bratislava, Slovakia site.  January 1999- June 2000.  Oversaw teaching staff of 19 full and part-time instructors. Responsible for all aspects of IEP, including course scheduling, recruiting, hiring, addressing students’ needs.  Spearheaded  new writing placement test, student help center, and collecting data for “Accuplacer” test validity study. Maintained link to classroom life by instructing at least one ESL course per term.  Cooperated as member of dynamic international academic management team to insure smooth running of CU / Slovakia.

Special Programs Assistant, International Programs, Bellevue Community College, Bellevue, WA. October 1994—March 1995; June—September 1998.   Worked with BCC International Programs staff and tour companies around Seattle area, co-led activities and events for full-time BCC international students as well as short-term stay groups.  Coordinated homestays and entire itinerary for 14-day tour for 25 Japanese students. Also provided front office assistance to students and ESL instructors as needed.
