BIOLOGY 11O: Basic Concepts and Biodiversity

The goal of Biology 110 is to introduce students to fundamental concepts in biology and to briefly survey and appreciate the diversity of life on earth. Biology 110 is a 4-credit course with lecture and laboratory components.

BIOLOGY 222: Genetics

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of genetics. Topics include classical (Mendelian) genetics, gene expression and regulation, recombinant DNA technology, mutation, genomics, molecular evolution, and population genetics. Prerequisite: 3 credits in biological sciences

BIOLOGY 230W: Molecules and Cells

The goal of this course is to provide students with comprehensive and current information regarding cellular phenomena, including cell structure, molecular genetics, and metabolic interactions.  Prerequisites: BIOL 110 and CHEM 110

BIOLOGY 413: Cell Signaling and Regulation

This course examines the mechanisms cells employ to communicate with each other through intracellular and extracellular signaling molecules.  Subject matter will consider a wide variety of cellular signaling mechanisms, including discussions of receptors, G-proteins, protein kinase cascades, cell cycle regulation, and apoptosis. Prerequisite: BIOL 240W

BIOLOGY 422W: Advanced Genetics

The goals of Biology 422W are: 1) to gain a more thorough understanding of fundamental principles in genetics and molecular biology; 2) to enable students to read and interpret literature in the field of genetics; and 3) to apply genetic analysis to research problems. Topics include recombinant DNA technology, genomics, recombination, yeast genetics, chemical genetics, non-nuclear inheritance, quantitative genetics, population genetics, and molecular evolution. Prerequisite: BIOL 033 or BIOL 222 or BIOL 230W

VETERINARY BIOSCIENCE 211: The Immune System and Disease

The goal of VBSC 211 is to provide an introduction to immunology that emphasizes the immune response to infection, and the consequences of a defective immune response.  Topics include: the innate and adaptive immune systems; self-tolerance; immunological memory; vaccines; immunopathology; and cancer.
