Criminal Justice Career Opportunities

Note: I haven't updated this section for a few years
and some of the links are no longer valid.
I'll rework this section in the near future.

It's important to remember that most criminal justice jobs are at the county or municipal
level.  These jobs may be advertised only at the local level.  You should check directly with local
agencies or look in the help wanted ads in the area where you want to work.  That said, the
web sites below might be useful for generally poking around the job market.

I recommend that you start your search by talking to the staff at Penn State Altoona's
Career Services office.  They will not only give you advice to help you locate
opportunities, but can help you develop skills that will help you land the position.

A few useful sites to help you search for criminal justice jobs within Pennsylvania:
PA State Civil Service Commission
The Bureau of State Employment directs hiring for non-civil service jobs in PA, including
some positions in corrections and state level investigative agencies.
Pennsylvania Career Link is a state government operated web site that tries to link
job seekers with private employers.

A few useful sites to help you search nationwide:

USAJOBS.com is the official job site of the federal government
GOVTJOB.net lists opportunities in all levels of government
GOVTJOB.net public safety and criminal justice section
LawEnforcementJobs.com has job listings and other resources
The career links page at Corrections.com

Ira Wilsker maintains one of the most comprehensive list of law enforcement links available
on the web.  This link takes you to the job listings section of his site.

More criminal Justice career web sites can be found
at the Employment Mega-Links in Criminal Justice and
at Sheffield Publishing's Selected Criminal Justice Job Related Internet Sites

For a good list of books to help you explore criminal justice careers,
