Next Generation

I just learned this week that one of our most recent hires is twelve days older than my daughter Sarah. That was startling to me and I've been spending a lot of time recently thinking about cross generational organizations, how diversity comes in many forms, and how can we as administrators nurture these very talented young faculty?

There is an excellent article in the May 28th issue of Fortune entitled, "You Raised Them, Now Manage Them." Rather than tell you about it, I'll just stay that from my point of view, it's worth reading. One thing to note: the lead article in this feature was written by a 26 year old.

Baby boomers, pay attention. This is a very talented group of twentysomethings. They may be cockier than you're used to, but stay wth them, help them, listen to them.

Here's another Gen-Y article: http://www.news.com/2008-1022_3-6195553.html

What interested me were 1) the emphasis on product versus process, and 2) unitasking versus multitasking--meetings being the ultimate unitask.

It will be interesting to see how this generation as well as new collaborative technologies will shape the way we do business in higher ed. What will our calendars look like in the future?
