Course Description - Spanish 001Spanish 001 is a course designed for students who have had no exposure to the Spanish language. Students who have had an introductory course in high school may also be placed in Spanish 001, but no previous knowledge of the language is required. Class size is limited to twenty-two students in order to maximize the time available for students to practice speaking in Spanish. Students will begin by learning basic vocabulary used in common situations, such as vocabulary for the classroom, numbers, calendar information (days, months, seasons), colors, and adjectives. With this vocabulary they will describe people, talk about daily and weekly routines, tell time, and express future plans. They will be equipped with the most basic grammatical structures of the language (present tense, present progressive tense, gender and number agreement, periphrastic future tense, pronouns) and will put these structures to use by relating personalized information to their classmates. Students will preview grammatical structures and vocabulary in class before completing a variety of homework assignments relating to the new structures and vocabulary online through ANGEL. Classes will be structured around a PowerPoint presentation that will later be available to the students to view online. The class will first provide a contextualized review of the grammatical structures and vocabulary that will be used in activities to be completed in class on that day. The majority of time in class will be spent putting what they have learned on ANGEL to use by writing and conversing in Spanish. Students will often work in pairs or in small groups in order to allow students the maximum amount of time producing the language. Classes meet for fifty minutes twice a week. Students can expect to spend approximately two hours a week doing homework online through ANGEL. In addition to textual explanations of new grammar and vocabulary, students will be provided with audio clips, video clips, and pictures to enhance their learning experience through ANGEL. Additionally, students will have eight compositions, fifty words each to complete as homework. The topics will be available on the syllabus. Students will be evaluated by their ANGEL assignments, compositions, four exams (three written, one oral), and class participation. Course Description - Spanish 002Spanish 002 is a class designed for students who have taken Spanish 001 or have had two years of high school Spanish. Class size is limited to twenty-two students in order to maximize the time available for students to practice speaking in Spanish. The course will begin with a review of present tense verbs, reflexives, saber vs. conocer, ser vs. estar, and the periphrastic future tense. The new material students will learn are the preterit and imperfect tenses, commands, and the subjunctive to express desire and doubt. New vocabulary includes words related to clothing, food, sports, and carrers, among other things. During the summer session, students will learn the vocabulary and grammar in class, (as opposed to the fall and spring semesters where they learn vocabulary and grammar on ANGEL). They will put this new information to use in the classroom by conversing with other students and the instructor, and viewing cultural materials that enhance the lesson. Students will be expected to complete homework on ANGEL, and will be required to write 75 word compositions outside of class. Topics will be available on the syllabus. In the summer, classes meet for two hours and ten minutes five times a week for six weeks. (Spring schedule differs - see SPAN 001 Course Description above for class hours for SPAN 002). Students will be evaluated by their ANGEL assignments, compositions, four exams (three written, one oral), and class participation. Spanish 002 Summer Syllabus |
