Kang's research interests include complex networks, computational organizational science, multi-agent systems and agent-based models.

At the Intelligent Agent Laboratory of Penn State IST, Kang is currently studying (1) the robustness of heterogeneous complex networks, such as supply networks. (2) agent-based coaltion formation in inter-organizational networks (NSF Project COHORT).

At the Institute for Geospatial Research and Education of EMU, he conducted research on agent-based models for urbanization (Project DESAKOTA-Repast) and post-disaster recovery (Project EnDURE).
