"They learned about JFK from Oliver Stone and Malcolm X from Spike Lee."

Beloit College released their MINDSET LIST® FOR THE CLASS OF 2011 . The incoming class of 2011 carries with them a very different perspective than most of "us" do. It is highly recommended reading and a quick way to begin to come to grips with what makes our student customers tick. My personal favorite is, "They were introduced to Jack Nicholson as “The Joker.”

"Wal-Mart has always been a larger retailer than Sears and has always employed more workers than GM."

Wow that means they have no idea that the Sears tower in Chicago was named after the company.

I took all of them in, but here are some of my faves:

22. No one has ever been able to sit down comfortably to a meal of “liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”
(kmh - um, then how does Buffalo Bill make them feel? LOL!)

29. They were too young to understand Judas Priest’s subliminal messages.
(kmh - just LOL!)

46. Most phone calls have never been private.
(kmh - I'm not so sure they ever really were...)

60. They will encounter roughly equal numbers of female and male professors in the classroom.
(kmh - interesting reflection of the workforce changes underway in the last few years)

63. Avatars have nothing to do with Hindu deities.
(kmh - I hate avatars! I can't manage my first life, why would I want a Second one...LOL)

What this all proves to me? We need to constantly keep our fingers on the pulse, and sometimes, it takes some sacrifice. In between The Flight of the Conchords, Entourage, Six Feet Under, Discovery Times, etc., it's why at my age, I still tune into what I consider the dumbest tv possible - from Big Brother to My Super Sweet Sixteen to Flava' of Love and the whole horrible list goes on. It's one of many ways to keep yourself tapped into what's going on, on some level, in addition to walking around campus, reading magazines, taking a stroll around the juniors section of any given department store (LOL).

Is it bad that I was born just a couple of years before that and pretty much all of these apply to me too?

"66. The World Wide Web has been an online tool since they were born."

And we wonder why they are so different? I am betting access has something to do with it.

21. Eastern Airlines has never “earned their wings” in their lifetime.

AAARGH! I took my first plane ride on Eastern Airlines, and even got my own wings!

Excuse me, while I shovel my way into my grave...

Maybe this means that our "education" efforts will be harder with the "old" folks! The expectations are much lower(!)
