I'm tired

| | Comments (56) | TrackBacks (0)

I'm not physically tired. I'm tired of no comments. So, I'm doing a poll. Please follow the instructions carefully.

1. Start your favorite web browser.
2. Type the letter "r" in your location bar as if you were doing old school surfing.
3. Post a comment and tell everyone what site first appears for auto-completion.

Mine is predictable, I'm curious what comes up for you.

beats me how I found this clown site in the first place...
I'd like to buy a vowel, please.

Hey, I use the autocomplete feature several times a day!

For completeness' sake, my "r" autocomplete was http://www.real.com/player/, but only because I just rebuilt my system (and needed RP yesterday to watch a webcast).

What caused me to ask is the alarming regularity with which I can type single letter, hit down arrow, press return and get what I want. And the letters in question are some killer hangman letters - r,s,n,d . Everyone else's answer so far is affirming my suspicions that I'm doing something peculiar/off-the-beaten track in my browsing habits.

Just one of those thoughts I got stuck in my head....

As a big WB fan (Bugs Bunny) my favorite "r" site so far is Dave's.

Rent-a-clown? Rent-a-clown?!?!?

Exactly! I do this all the time! It's how I usually get to sites (perhaps this means I tend to visit a small number of sites, I dunno).

haven't made this yet, I'll let you know how it tastes when I do.

I get nothing. Zilch. Nada. A big goose egg when I type in "r" by itself.

Type in j, q, v, x, z, and I also get nothing.

Type in any other letter, and I get something for sure. Kevin you had me intrigued, so I went through the alphabet.

You might appreciate what comes up for me for "d":

d = http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=bolus

Here's the result:

I did this on two different machines. On my tower in my office, I hadn't cached anything beginning with r, so I came across the r-project site, as expected.

My laptop was a different story. I had looked up, at one time, Web sites for Bettie Page memorabilia. So, when I entered r, I received:
http://www.retrojunction.com/shop/images/products/Limited%20Editor. LOL!!! Let's not jump to any conclusions here - I like collecting 50s pinup memorabilia, and I love the work of Alberto Vargas.

And, FWIW, I believe the official Bettie Page Web site is: http://www.bettiepage.com/. LOL.

I definitely want the vowel - I'll buy it from Robin...

Yes, Rent-a-Clown -
OK, here's the rest of the story: I had been directed to Rent-a-clown from another's email hot link. Since I use auto-complete all the time this is honestly what showed up.

Of course, I could have cheated and put the second "R" entry: ttp://rawstory.com/news/2007/Jon_Stewart_Who_put_bomb_in_0803.html

I never thought of doing this.... thanks for the idea, Kevin! Anyway, the site that came up for me was http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html

I know you are trying to encourage us all to blog as a communication avenue. For me, it's still check and respond to email first, and if I'm bored or trying to locate something specific, I'll look at blogs, but not usually post. Reluctance to post, I suppose, is due to many factors, but among them is not feeling particularly authorizative on the topic, or not wanting to take the time to construct a well-thoughtout posting that may never be read by anybody......
Still waiting for that "must do" reason to "blog" Now, if my boss had one.........

This is about my 4th or 5th blogging attempt in my life and I'm still trying to figure out "voice", etc. The big thing that got me over the hump was travel. When I would go to a meeting or conference off-campus, I would try to listen for hundreds of people and report back. I might not be an expert, but I was the only Penn Stater there so I was the expert on that event. That made me more comfortable communicating this way and helped PSU get more out of the dollars spent in getting me there.

Now I try to do the same with all meetings and conversations - but not all that goes on is "bloggable." But that which is "bloggable" I try to remember to share as broadly as I can. And the most recent transformation I've had is when I have a thought, I'm trying to learn how to share those as well - even though I may not be an expert in that given area. It takes time to get comfortable - and repetition.

What fun! But you should have chosen the letter X. ;)

Cynde said:

r-project comes up when you hit enter. I did that the first time too until I realized you wanted what was in our cache. So to all of you that are doing this don't hit enter, just type in R and see what comes up from your cached sites. :)

I have three machines in my office, Mac, XP, and RedHat. So, I was interested as to what I would find on each of them. The Mac and Windows had a hit. RedHat had nothing as FireFox is configured to dump all stored data on exit, including the "history".
Mac: radar.weather.gov/...
XP:http://reviews.cnet.com/windows/windows-mobile-6/4505-3672_7-32328708.html

reader.google.com

I use this as an RSS aggregator in which I create different feed categories (e.g, blogs), and then I use Sage in Firefox to keep an eye on the aggregate feeds. That drastically reduces the length of the feed list in Sage.

Re Jeff D's entry: I checked "d" and got docs.google.com.

I did the same thing Cynde did and got the R-project page. So, I tried it again using her suggestions and came up with the "Radio Station Guide" http://www.windowsmedia.com/Mediaguide/Radio - I had finally decided to get with the times and access some music on the web rather than on that old fashioned radio. No reception in my office anyway.
