In this portfolio, I have collected my reflections on teaching, examples of how I approach a classroom, the ways in which I have used technology in courses, and evidence of the effectiveness of my teaching methods. As educators, it is imperative that we reflect upon and improve our teaching methods in an iterative fashion. I am very grateful to the students, professors, and colleagues who provided candid feedback that has allowed me to improve my teaching throughout my graduate career. According to my most recent students, this has resulted in an environment that is thought-provoking, welcoming, and warm, even with 125 students in a class (see the Student Comments on Teaching section for specific evidence). The creation of this atmosphere would not have been possible without training by the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, Information and Technology Services (ITS), and the guidance of Drs. Doug Coatsworth, Sherry Corneal, David Eggebeen, and Matthew Callahan. I am also indebted to several fellow graduate students for sharing their enthusiasm for teaching: Annie Pezalla, Tara Stoppa, and Kelly Rulison. Thank you!
Note: I have taken free courses and workshops to improve my teaching through the Schreyer Institute and ITS and would highly recommend that all PSU faculty and graduate students who intend to teach consider taking as many of these courses and workshops as they can. The Schreyer faculty were invaluable in providing resources for keeping classes with large enrollments feeling like classes with small enrollments, and ITS has provided me with the means to manage large enrollments and maintain contact easily with students.
