In my substantive work, I am interested in factors affecting the development of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth, including sexual attraction and identity, relationships with family members and peers, victimization on the basis of sexual orientation, and mental health and suicide risk. In my methodological work, I am interested in person-specific models for intensive longitudinal studies. In my research, I would like to combine my substantive and methodological interests to explore intraindividual differences in the effect of sexual orientation victimization on mental health and functioning over time at the individual level. I would also like to develop new statistical approaches which allow for comparisons between individuals in such intensive models. To this end, I have pursued two different lines of study in my graduate work:
First, I have worked extensively with Dr. Anthony D'Augelli on the Q & A Project, a longitudinal study of victimization, mental health, and coping among LGB youth. In our work, we have published articles on predictors of suicide attempts, traumatic stress symptoms, and coming out to family members. As I became more involved in research on LGBTA people, I realized that the questions I could ask were limited by the statistical methods that were available to me. As a result, I began intensive training in research and statistical methods with Dr. Peter Molenaar and Dr. Michael Rovine. In our work, we focus on statistical methods for studying developmental processes at the individual-level, including time series analyses, hidden Markov models, and p-technique.
