The banners of this website contain images of a quilt called "Transgress" that I made for my daughter's twelfth birthday. As with most pre-teens, she seemed overwhelmed by the rapid changes in herself and her peers; the quilt was designed to honor these changes. I greatly enjoyed making this quilt as it incorporated one of my central interests: transition. In my research, I am concerned with transitions from mental distress to mental heath, from adolescence to young adulthood, and from heterosexuality to bisexuality or homosexuality (and perhaps back again). In my teaching, I try to help students transition from naive readers to critical consumers and producers of research. Finally, at home I try to create successful transitions in fabric, wherein one element of a quilt flows into another. In this site, I detail the ways in which I have studied, taught, and encouraged positive transitions for myself and others.
