News and Updates:
15 April 2007:
Common Issue (no joke, someone said this to me): "I'm not voting in the election. What the Hell is the UPUA anyway?"
Here's the Nittany Notes* version:
The former University Student Government (USG) was deemed ineffective by the administration,
mostly, prompting a referendum to remove the USG and replace it with a Student Advocacy group by the name of the UPUA
(University Park Undergraduate Association). It was a difficult process, it was a controversial process, and approximately 8%
of the student body can claim to understand the process (or at least be able to differentiate between voting for the UPUA
as opposed to the USG). Say what you will about its creation; it exists and it is officially empowered to voice student opinion
- whatever that exactly means.
Here's what it means to us:
The administration is uniquely positioned to do whatever it feels is in the students' best interests.
Commentary as to whether or not this is truly in our best interests is irrelevant and unnecessary. The UPUA spent its first session
creating the bylaws and the constitutional processes of the organization. With those necessary steps taken, it is time to use the
system that has been created to lobby for student interests. The only thing left for this student advocacy group to do is to advocate.
