Music is everywhere. On the bus, in the mall, in the restaurant, at the game, and even at the hospital music is a part of the atmosphere. Music is something that has become a part of everyday life. We listen to music to put our minds in another place and to escape from the world around us. For many people, music may govern the way that they choose to express themselves in their dress and actions. Music is something that touches our lives daily. Children are already interested in music, but it is the responsibility of a school’s music education program to help them understand music as well as feel it.
Music was an influential part of the history of America. Because it helped to define what our country stands for, and continues to affect our culture today, the school system must make it a priority to teach all students how to understand this thing that has had such a powerful influence. The school system has the ability to make decisions that will either positively or negatively impact the lives of thousands of children. Music education is something that most children may not get at home on a daily basis or even at all. Since music has had and will continue to have such a defining influence in this world, the school system must do all that it can to give all students an education in music.
It is important that a school give its students the opportunity to explore the different venues that the world has to offer. Through a music education program a child can explore their strengths and weaknesses. By participating in an ensemble, a child will discover if they have the innate gift for performing in front of a public audience. They will also learn the value and importance of being a team player. These are skills that are irreplaceable in the professional music world and especially in the corporate world. There will always be times when one will need to be a leader, and there will also be moments when one needs to follow and diligently work for the good of the team. Music teaches these disciplines in an interactive, and hands on environment. All ensembles need hard work and determination from every one of its members. The minute that a student walks into an ensemble rehearsal, their participation is needed until the minute that they walk out. Music programs give children the ability to become an important part of something amazing, and the opportunity to feel the pride and happiness that comes with such participation.
No child should not be taught information that they need to survive in today’s world. Everyone needs to know how to add, read, and remember. Just as these examples are things that we must do everyday; there are vital aspects of music that no one should walk through today’s world without knowing. People of all ages should be able to recognize and sing the resting tone in different modes. They should also be able to use their bodies to express different meters. The general music classroom teaches children some of the things that they need to succeed in today’s music and media based culture.
Music is, has been, and always will be an important part of our culture, history and lifestyle; and therefore it must remain an important part of the American school system.
